Had a great time at the Uber Gen AI Meetup in Bangalore! As I'm starting my Gen AI learning journey, it was amazing to see how experts are using AI to solve real problems. Following are some of the highlights from the event: - Jayaram Valliyur set the stage with their welcome and keynote on Uber's advancements in GenAI - Vivasvat Keswani introduced Uber's Michelangelo: Platform to build, deploy, and operate machine learning/ GenAI solutions at Uber’s scale - Sameera Poduri showed us how Uber is using Generative AI to make customer service better. - Varsha Mahadevan from Coinbase discussed the importance of keeping AI safe and secure in applications, focusing on prompt injection and implementing guardrails to prevent misuse. - Lokesh Agarwal from Kognitos discussed how AI could change our future - Pratyush Kumar from Sarvam AI emphasized the importance of using Indian languages in AI, making it more inclusive and also discussed building a full stack GenAI platform - Rush Tehrani from Uber focused on scaling ML infrastructure, deployment and serving of LLMs at Scale - Manyata Goyal and Geeti Oberoi introduced us to Uber’s tool, uLabel, which is Uber's labeling framework / data annotation solution that helps with organising data. - Ayush Garg, Chanakya Malireddy, Radhesh Sarma, and Georgy Mathew brought to light various advanced techniques like RAG-based chatbots, dynamic few-shot prompting, auto evaluation framework, showcasing Uber's leadership in applying AI to solve complex problems. - Smit Shah spoke on extracting actionable insights from LLMs, another testament to the practical uses of AI in business operations. - Ajeet Ganga explained how they're leveraging Gen AI to help manage Uber's workforce better - Panel discussion on "Unlocking the Value of Gen AI" moderated by Sameera Poduri featured Rohit Chatter from Walmart, @Vivasvat Keswani from Uber and Saurabh Dash from Cohere, along with Pratyush Kumar from Sarvam AI, offering diverse perspectives on the integration and impact of AI technologies across various sectors. While there are certainly individual variations in skill and experience when discussing modern software development the story is much more nuanced than pure individual effort.  * software development is a team sport -- individual performance is heavily impacted by the system in which they are asked to operate in.  * we pair skill and experience to this model of understanding performance by expecting people to be able to influence and adapt in direct proportion to their seniority, aka the more senior you are the more responsible you are for the outcomes of your work, the less senior you are the more your manager and management chain are responsible.  * humans want to succeed, we're social animals who derive purpose from demonstrating skill, and working collectively. All of which is to say there is no way you have over 1000 people underperforming at your company without senior leadership deeply implicated in.  If nearly 10% of your company is failing, versus just having the market move against you, you need to fire the CEO.

Trying to apply principles from ancient Indian philosophy in writing better code. A “Sutra” is that which is concise (Alpākṣaraṃ), unambiguous (Asandigdhaṃ), essential (Sāravat), universally applicable (Viśvatomukham), free of unnecessary detail (Astobham), and flawless (Anavadyam). Applying the attributes of a Sutra to coding: 💡 Conciseness (Alpākṣaraṃ): Less is more! Keep code efficient and minimal. 📘 Unambiguity (Asandigdhaṃ): Clarity is kindness. Use descriptive names, avoid “magic numbers,” and comment only when necessary. 🎯 Essence of Value (Sāravat): Every line should have purpose. Focus on core functionality, not bloated code. 🌐 Universality (Viśvatomukham): Make it adaptable and reusable. Use modular functions and design patterns for flexibility. 🧹 Free from Unnecessary Detail (Astobham): Avoid over-engineering. Meet current needs with simple solutions and save complexity for when it’s essential. 🔒 Flawlessness (Anavadyam): Aim for rock-solid reliability and security. Review, test, and refine. Interviewing at Google is an experience in itself. I shared my own interview experience from 2005 here - https://lnkd.in/gSVxtF45. "Challenge the status quo" is one of Google values which I experienced from the day I interviewed to this very day. I shared how this showed up in the article I mentioned above. Specifically what it means to be Googley or what is Googleyness (which in itself is an interview focus area). I also shared some interview tips in the article. How does your organization evaluate candidates? Do you evaluate for culture fit to create a homogeneous environment? Do you see if candidates would "challenge the status quo"? Share your thoughts and perspective.

System Design is one of my favorite. Here is the list of system design building blocks that are important irrespective of whether you are designing a system or preparing for a system design interview ✔️ Distributed message queue: A producer puts a message Or work in a line, which the consumers pick up for further processing or work defined. This is an important concept to explain how you can scale your system, perform asynchronous processing, ✔️ DNS: Translates website names to IP address. DNS service works much like a phone directory. Services like Route53 help configure the domain and routing, and one needs to understand common types of resource records like A, CNAME, NS, MX, etc. ✔️ CDN: The content delivery network is a server between the origin and the client. It stores and delivers content to the end users, reducing latency and improving the system's overall performance. ✔️ PUB SUB: Publish-subscribe messaging works asynchronously, involving publishers, topics, subscribers, and messages. It helps to decouple the system, scalability, Durability, etc. ✔️ Load Balancer: Load balancer helps divide and divert traffic across the system. It helps drive the overall system Availability and Performance. ✔️ Distributed Caching: Caching servers store the data in memory and return it to the end users, improving the overall performance and end-user experience. A fleet of servers works together to keep and serve the data in a distributed caching system, enhancing availability. ✔️ Database: Understanding data storage, storage, types, and choosing a Database, RDMBS Vs Nosql, is vital when designing a system. It is essential to deeply understand for what requirements RDBMS is the right fit, and nosql is the right fit. ✔️ Observability: It's important to know what is happening in the system. How do we make the system easier to debug and fix? Observability helps the system to drive maintainability, resiliency, and reliability. ✔️ Task Scheduler: This is an essential component that helps one decide how the tasks must be prioritized, delegated and how much resources need to be allocated ✔️ Unstructured Data Storage: Storing photos, videos, audio, and other unstructured data is essential when designing a system since these cannot be stored in traditional databases. One needs to create a highly available, consistent, reliable solution. and efficient ✔️ Scaling Services: Scalability is an essential building block of any robust system. Understanding various scaling options and what options should be used is critical. From Serverless to ID generators, one must understand the multiple options and how to design them. ✔️ Distributed Search: Search is the core of many system designs. In the previous class of my HLD cohort, we continued with understanding how to scale the stateful components of the system, and one very important topic that came up was: How do you decide on the right partition key? The 3 important points to consider: - The cardinality of the set represented by the key you are choosing. - It should have a uniform distribution of load across the values. - Check your usage patterns and understand how your application is going to be used. At times, you cannot satisfy all 3 above in which case your problem-solving comes into the picture. You have to implement some custom solution using the same building blocks of system design.
