This tension gave way to a variety of literary strategies for coping with censorship. This thesis intends to compile a reasoned catalog of them and to reconstruct the historical sequence of their respective uses; and this in order to demonstrate that the succession of these strategies was part of a larger reflexion as to the obstacle, as well as the artistic opportunity, that censorship presented for writing.
Thus, the comparative analysis of the novels of Šotola, Kramer, Veis, Hrabal, Andrzejewski, Bocheński, Lem and Brandys reveals four types of writing, ranging from redemptive excess to the staging of the impotence of the artist, through the manufacture of eloquent silences or the use of carefully calibrated allusions.
