In this paper the basics of compression in the medical area as well as in the sportive field will be presented. Five compression stockings were tested. In order to choose the right socks, a detailed inquiry about the currently available compression stockings on the market was conducted. The stockings were tested with the dynamometer and pressure sensor in the laboratory and furthermore all the socks were tested by running trials in the gym on the treadmill. The most important details and facts as well as the results of the laboratory investigations and the running tests will be presented in this paper. This work was financed by FEDER funds through the Competitivity Factors Operational Program - COMPETE and by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of the project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007136

In this paper, the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) subsystem of the PROTACTICAL CPS is presented and evaluated. Firstly, the architecture of the PROTACTICAL CPS is introduced, then we introduce the node responsible for computing the position of the emergency responder based on the PDR approach and the theory behind our implementation. Five different paths were selected to evaluate the performance of our system, which include 2D and 3D scenarios. The Euclidean distance between the starting and final points and the total distance travelled were the metrics selected for the system performance evaluation. Although the tracking capabilities of the proposed system are quite evident, the error of the total distance travelled does not comply with the requirements of an IPS for emergency responders. The system reported an error up to 17% of the total distance travelled.

There are a multitude of sports and probably the most popular is running, due not only to its simplicity but also to the economics factor. The thermal interaction of human body and the environment during running activity is an important mechanism that may affect the athlete’s performance [2]. For this reason, the cloth an athlete uses play an important role since it should provide comfort and should protect him from all environmental impacts, and thus with a benefit in the performance and efficiency of the athlete [3]. In this work we compare five commercially available models of sports bra specifically conceived for running and analyze the heat dissipation using a thermal manikin in a controlled environment. Due to the differences in raw material, finishing and knitted structure, the team expects to obtain different behaviors and thus understand which should be the most favorable candidate for this specific sport.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

The sportswear is responsible to support the thermal comfort of the wearer and consequently the thermoregulation, which means helping in body’s heat regulation by maintaining the skin temperature of 33°C and body’s core temperature of 37°C. Each sport has its own requisites and rowing is no exception. In the following investigation there were examined three different groups of water-repellent finished functional rowing shirts, featuring different knitting structures. The shirts were tested in a climatic chamber with a thermal manikin under constant conditions and afterwards analyzed using infrared thermography. The objective was to find out which sample shirts and knitting structures provide the best performance under different environmental conditions.FC

Studies state that in 2025 the number of patients around the world will approximately be the double. Due to the complications promoted by diabetes, the patient looses sensitivity, but at the same time injuries are more complicated to be healed. Special care must take place with diabetic feet, namely by using proper shoes and socks, in order to avoid exceeding friction, sudation, high temperature, among other relevant factors. One of the most serious problems for diabetic patients is called diabetic foot syndrome, that when neglected, can become dramatic, because in extreme cases, amputation of the foot may occur. In this research we studied several socks, made with new and advanced materials and diversified knitted structures, focusing on socks commercially available and specially designed for diabetic patients, in order to understand what would be the most adequate combination of structure...

They can be a positive contribution to it, or a burden and stress factor, or even a health risk factor. Based on the premise that it is harder to ignore what we see than what we hear, the team developed a garment that senses environmental noise and shows it through lighting. In this way, people are made aware about the noise around them. In this paper, we describe and discuss the design process of the interactive garment developed, which communicates with the user and other people around through light.

However, the propagation of wireless signals in indoor environments is affected by nonline-of-sight (NLOS) conditions, which can lead to positively biased distance estimates. Several research works were carried out in this area, but the NLOS effect caused by the human body shadowing on the ranging performance is not properly addressed in the literature. In this paper, a commercial UWB transceiver is used to assess the impact of the human body shadowing on the ranging accuracy. A set of real-time features is combined with different machine learning algorithms for NLOS identification and mitigation. With a subset of four features, a 0.97 F1-score was obtained for NLOS identification. For NLOS mitigation, with a subset of three features, the residual error follows a Gaussian distribution, has a mean error close to zero, and an STD of 0.67 m.

Two different transducing elements (EeonTex™ LG-SLPA and velostat) and electrodes (Satatex Techniktex P-130 and Elitex yarns) were selected for the construction of the sensors. The performance of the resulting sensors was assessed based on a dynamometer cyclic compression/decompression test with different compressions loads and at different speeds. Additionally, a real-life experiment was conducted to evaluate the sensor response during walking. The results show that all sensors configurations have a non-linear resistance-force relation. The best sensor configuration for the step detection was the combination of EeonTex™ LG-SLPA as a transducing element and the Elitex yarns for the electrodes. In this configuration, the resistance magnitude varies in an order of hundreds of kohms between the stance and the swing phases.
The availability of a reliable and accurate indoor positioning system (IPS) for emergency respond... more The availability of a reliable and accurate indoor positioning system (IPS) for emergency responders during onduty missions is regarded as an essential tool to improve situational awareness of both the emergency responders and the incident commander. This tool would facilitate the mission planning, coordination and accomplishment, as well as, decrease the number of on-duty deaths. Due to the absence of GPS (global positioning system) signal in indoor environments, many other signals and sensors have been proposed for indoor usage. However, the challenging scenarios faced by emergency responders imply explicit restrictions and requirements on the design of an IPS, making the use of some technologies, techniques, and methods inadequate on these scenarios. This survey paper identifies the specific requirements of an IPS for emergency responders and provides a tutorial coverage of the localization techniques and methods, highlighting the pros and cons of their use. Then, the existing IPSs specifically developed for emergency scenarios are reviewed and compared with a focus on the design choices, requirements and additional features. By doing so, an overview of current IPS schemes as well as their performance is given. Finally, we discuss the main issues of the existing IPSs and some future directions.

They can positively or negatively change our quality of life. Given the idea that it is harder to ignore what we see, rather than what we hear, the team developed a garment that senses environmental noise and shows it through lighting, to make people aware of the noise around them. The garment chosen was a jacket, with a deliberately provocative design. It is the authors’ intention to study the integration of lighting in garments for more subtle ways of expression, in other context, such as health monitoring, sports or social interaction.
