However, there is an immediate need to strengthen co-scholastic areas to equip students to face
real life challenges. Films can make a significant contribution to a value based learning
curriculum. Thus, co-scholastic skills can be effectively nurtured by a medium that is entertaining
and impactful. The purpose of this study was to analyse the impact of a film based learning
module – *School Cinema on students and to compare the levels of self-esteem, conformity,
emotional stability and general well-being between students who were undergoing School
Cinema and those who were not. The sample included 1200 students between 11-14 years
studying in the 6th and 7th grade across 5 cities of India. Employing a purposive sampling
technique and a pre-test post-test design, the sample was divided into a control group (students
who were not a part of School Cinema) and an experimental group (students who were a part of
School Cinema). The difference indicated in the pre-test post-test scores of both the groups was
phenomenal. The results showed that cinema is a powerful medium that can be used to bring
about positive change in the thinking and behavioural patterns of students. The results also imply
that School Cinema is an important tool to address different issues that adolescents face as it
helps build emotional stability, self-esteem and develop students holistically through experiential
learning.

from families that are economically backward. While every child in India has a right to education,
unfortunately in reality, this is far from the truth. If this situation is not improved, underprivileged
children cannot grow, develop and be uplifted to lead a better life. These children are the most
ignored part of the society and this creates a sense of insecurity and a feeling of inferiority amongst
them.
In recent times, the Indian Government and many corporate houses are taking initiatives in creating
innovative and practical methods to meet with societal and educational challenges and demands. The
Government has set up many schools for underprivileged students. Every day, millions of children
enter the gates of government and corporation schools to become somebody in life. Unfortunately,
these schools lack the necessary resources and funds to provide quality education. While most of
these schools do meet the academic needs of the students, they do not necessarily equip them with
skills and values to face actual life challenges. We believe that all students deserve to be
encouraged, guided and educated with the necessary knowledge, skills and values so that they grow
to be productive and responsible citizens in the future.
In an attempt to help students in *Government and corporation schools, *The Activity and *The
Akshaya Patra Foundation have come together to bring about the Akshaya Life Skills programme
for all students in these schools. The programme intends to equip children with the necessary skills,
values and attitudes to cope and deal with life’s challenges in an effective manner, thereby
developing strong personalities. “Life skills education promotes mental well-being in young people
and equips them to face the realities of life. By supporting mental well-being and behavioural
preparedness, life skills education equips individuals to behave in a pro-social ways and it is
additionally health giving” (Birell Weisen and Orley, 1996). This paper examines the impact of the
Akshaya Life Skills programme on the students’ co-scholastic skills and scholastic development. The
results indicate a positive change and improvement in all areas of concerns.
