In this paper, an attempt has been made to assess the causes for this stress and its resultant impacts on the land and environment and on the livelihood of the lake dwellers. The lake dwellers include people living on the lakeshore, islands and on phumdis. The study is mainly based on the primary sources of data which were collected through questionnaire interviews. The total sample size consisted of 500 households sampled from the 10 selected villages located around the Loktak Lake. The result showed that the lake is under severe stress mainly due to human interventions like the construction of Ithai Barrage Dam, weed infestation, pollution, encroachment, overexploitation of resources and siltation thereby causing flooding of the agricultural fields and villages, decrease in fisheries production and loss of biodiversity. The resultant impacts on the livelihoods o...

The study is based on primary sources of data collected with the help of questionnaire interviews from a sample of 2,101 women respondents belonging from different income groups, from Aligarh city. Information regarding their cooking conditions (4 factors), cooking related exposures (4 factors), housing (3 factors) and health conditions (3 factors) were collected. Total 14 factors linked with women vulnerability to indoor air pollution were identified. Indoor air pollutants were monitored in the cooking area and with different fuel usages to assess the indoor air quality. The results show that women are vulnerable to indoor air pollution but there was difference in the levels of vulnerability among the women belonging to different income groups. It was the lower income women who were most vulnerabl...

It increases the risk of acute respiratory infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, prenatal mortality, asthma, otitis media, tuberculosis, cataracts, blindness, tuberculosis etc., but the ill impact of indoor air pollution is directly and more pronounced to respiratory problems and diseases. This paper seeks to identify the risk factors associated to in-door air pollution and examines the linkages between respiratory disease symptoms (cough, phlegm, breath-lessness, wheezing, blood in sputum etc.) and house type (kutcha /semi Pucca houses), type of fuel used (biomass/LPG) and kitchen locations (indoor kitchen with partition, indoor kitchen without partition, multi-purpose room, open air) in different income house-holds of Aligarh city. In this study 2,101 women respondents belonging to different income groups were interviewed with the help of wel...

The study is mainly based on primary sources of data collected through field/household surveys with the help of questionnaire interviews. Data was collected from 996 households living in 66 developed residential colonies. The services were categorized into three levels (standards), level 1 (basic), level 2 (intermediate) and level 3 (higher), to assess their standard. The standard score additive model has been used to arrive at a Composite Mean Standard Index (CMSI). The average value of CMSI of water and sanitation were calculated and further categorized into four levels, high, moderate, low and very low, for the purpose of planning. Maps were prepared accordingly. Results have shown that colonies located along the main roads have a high level of water and sanitation facilities compared with the colonies located along the wedges of two roads.
