As an innovator, leader and manager in power conversion industry, I have contributed to many pioneering fields such as IGBT inverters, compressor VFD, smart utility metering, solar grid-tie, embedded electronics I&C, power quality and harmonic filtering, simulation and design tools for transformers and power system generation control. Along the way, I created world-class international engineering teams, overhauled the engineering process, supported the business growth and engaged in international technology exchange with Korea, Japan, China, Finland, Canada, France, Germany, Chile and others.

I strive to innovate solutions to engineering challenges resulting in new products and patents, enhanced design quality, reduced cost or improved design methodology. It has been a wonderful journey developing solutions that helped my industry in one form or another. For example, as the CTO in a Swiss-American transformer company, I created standardized design and test engineering processes in order to eliminate the company's malpractices that were causing products with marginal design and thermal failure. Elsewhere, I was one of the pioneers in the application of IGBT and MOSFET inverters to compressor motor drive and control by a customized ASIC. Whether a forerunner technology such as IGBT motor drive or a mature industry like transformers, it is a fulfilling experience to contribute to industrial advances just the same.

This paper presents the details of a method for the simulation of the six-pulse bridge converter ... more This paper presents the details of a method for the simulation of the six-pulse bridge converter with input filter. The input filter has a general form including any number of harmonic traps. In addition, the characteristics of the converter gating circuit are also simulated. The set of equations derived in this paper are valid for all modes of operation of the bridge converter including single and double commutation periods, freewheeling period, and operation under faulty conditions. The method is used for the steady state, transient and fault studies. Several examples illustrating the applications of the simulation method are included. The experimental results are used to verify the accuracy of the simulation method.

The government's efforts in energy conservation have led to many reports and mandates*. Some states like California, which big cities suffer from chronic air pollution, have promoted and legislated mandates to encourage both the consumers and the industrial manufacturers to become more energy conscious. There have also been Federal programs such as the Best Practices **(formerly Motor Challenge) to promote such trends in the electric motor industry through partial funding of programs that achieve improved efficiency in motor applications. The means for providing uninterruptible power source (UPS) to critical equipment have been around... more The means for providing uninterruptible power source (UPS) to critical equipment have been around for many years. The most recent UPS systems utilize battery banks as the source for backup power. Nevertheless, the batteries are perhaps the weakest link in a product that prides itself on infallibility. To make the matters worse, battery failures often result in release of acid and fumes which could harm the surrounding environment making the UPS a potentially risky backup power for certain applications. It is with this background that a new concept is proposed whereby the batteries are removed from the main body of the UPS through decentralized distribution of UPS power. This novel topology does not only do away with troubling batteries, it would also provide the highest possible availability unmatched by existing redundant and non-redundant systems presently on the market.
