UV-B irradiation and NaCl induced changes in growth, photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation,... more UV-B irradiation and NaCl induced changes in growth, photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide, proline content and enzymatic antioxidants viz. superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) in cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum were evaluated. Both the treatments alone and in combinations inhibited the growth. Among photosynthetic pigments phycocyanin was found to be the main target of UV-B and NaCl and it was followed by chlorophyll-a and carotenoids. Total peroxide content increased with simultaneous increase in lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage. The level of non enzymatic antioxidant proline and enzymatic antioxidant superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase were found to increase following UV-B and NaCl stress. However, enhancement in catalase activity was considerably less as compared to SOD and POD activities. The combined effect of UV-B and NaCl was more detrimental than individual treatment on the above parameters. The synergistic interaction of UV-B and NaCl is probably due to increased NaCl uptake as a result of increased membrane permeability caused by lipid peroxidation in Nostoc muscorum after UV-B exposure.
