Little attention is paid to this omnipresent "V" sign in nearly all of our Romanesque churches. The sign of Aries symbolizes the renewal that characterizes the period from March to April, when the peasant sees nature and life reborn in our countryside. It is also the time of births in herds. Sculptors use it as a symbol of animal rather than spiritual life. Easter, celebrating the resurrection, stays at that time, and adult catechumens were baptized on this occasion.

Sculptors use it as a symbol of animal rather than spiritual life. Easter, celebrating the resurrection, stays at that time, and adult catechumens were baptized on this occasion. I have selected some capitals where the sign of Aries carries a more substantial message , and thus try to go around what this renewal meant for the sculptors at that time, by highlighting the obvious symbols. Juin 2020.
