Using potential distribution models and environmental principal component analysis (PCA‐env), we first tested whether an expansion of the realized climatic niche of L. fulica occurred. The models showed geographical differences between the native and non‐native areas, especially in the Neotropical region, where the last introduction of mollusks occurred. Because PCA‐env showed a 60% expansion and 40% overlap between the native and global areas, we next investigated whether the expansion of the realized climatic niche of L. fulica was influenced by its geographical spread. Precipitation had the highest contribution in most models, but temperature was the variable that best explained the projected spread from the current Neotropical distribution. The current Neotropical distribution was better explained when the climatic conditions of the Indo‐Malayan and Australasian regions from which the species arrived in the Neotropics were included. PCA‐env showed 74% expansion between the native and Indo‐Malayan–Australasian areas and 97% expansion between the native and Neotropical areas. In conclusion, the spread between biogeographic regions and the existence of similar climatic conditions between the native and non‐native distributions would produce the observed climatic niche of L. fulica.

In Colombia, the giant African snail (Achatina fulica) has expanded across the country, occupying different habitats. We assessed the morphological variations of its shell in the cis- and trans-Andean regions of Colombia. We systematically and opportunistically collected snails at 12 locations in Colombia and applied geometric morphometric methods to analyse shell morphology variations. We found significant differences in A. fulica shell morphology, size, and allometry between cis- and trans-Andean regions. We also found differences in the frequencies of colour patterns, with pattern #2 being most frequent in the cis-Andean region and pattern #5 in the trans-Andean region. Results suggest that the shell morphology of A. fulica is an attribute that may respond to environmental, management or genetic differences between cis- and trans-Andean regions and that these differences should be considered in the design of management strategies across the country.

The Chocoan river turtle (Rhinoclemmys nasuta) is considered endemic to the Chocó region, near threatened (NT) worldwide and data deficient (DD) in Colombia. Due to lack of information about their demographics in environments with different degrees of human disturbance research was carried out to fill these gaps in three locations on the Pacific coast of the Department of Valle del Cauca (Isla Palma, San Pedro and Playa Chucheros). Based on six bimonthly capture-recapture events, population parameters were calculated, including density, population size and structure, and the likelihood of survival and capture for males, females and juveniles. Additionally, the population density was associated with abiotic (depth, access to land, number of hiding places, substrate) and biotic characteristics (vegetation cover and percentage of parasitism) of the habitat at two scal...

S... more Colombian North Pacific region host a huge valuable ecosystem due to its particular conditions. Some of these sectors are isolated and pristine, with little research effort. When there is a limitation of economic resources, classification and basic mapping techniques of the intertidal and subtidal habitats allow the identification of distinct and representative areas of a region. Previous studies point out the zones of Cabo Marzo- Bahia Aguacate and Punta Cruces- Bahia Cupica as ecologically important areas, therefore the present study focus on habitat mapping these sites. To create the map, we develop a hierarchical classification of intertidal and subtidal habitatsseparately. In conclusion, Colombian North Pacific region is extremely heterogenic in coastal habitat types and therefore important area for biodiversity conservation. Strategic conservation management and habitat protection is needed, integrating social-ecological approach in order to support the sustainable utilization...

To evaluate the intrapopulation genetic variation of A. fulica in the Valle del Cauca. Materials and methods . Ten microsatellite loci from specimens collected at eight municipalities in the Valle del Cauca Department were amplified. Allelic frequencies and descriptors of intrapopulation genetic diversity were estimated. Bayesian analysis was used to estimate the number of groups present in the study area. Results . Two groups were identified in the Valle del Cauca (p > 50%): one group comprised individuals from the north and center of the department, and one group comprised individuals from the south and west of the department.
