Excelenças, Senhoras y Senhores, meus amigos tudos: El altísimo honor que me ha dispensado la Aca... more Excelenças, Senhoras y Senhores, meus amigos tudos: El altísimo honor que me ha dispensado la Academia Portuguesa de Ex-Libris, a la que me honro en pertenecer desde hace varios años, de ser Orador en esta gran ocasión de su sexagésimo aniversario de su feliz fundación, y el no menos honorífico ámbito de la Sociedade de Geografía de Lisboa, cuyo prestigio trasciende las fronteras lusitanas y se extiende por el mundo, me pone en el natural compromiso de saber estar a la altura de este encargo. Y el intento no deja de ser muy comprometido, considerando la altura intelectual y académica de las personalidades aquí presentes, que me abruma y me obliga a hablar en castellano para no ofender a nadie con mi portinhol. Confío en que Vuestras Excelencias quieran disculparme que, por esos respetos, les hable en la lengua de Cervantes, y no en la de Camoes, como sería más oportuno hacer hoy aquí. A la hora de escoger el tema de mi oración conmemorativa, me ha parecido que quizá fuese las más adecuada la glosa del primer ex-libris que se usó en la Península Ibérica, que aunque es asunto conocido no deja de ser oportuno su recuerdo. Pero, como mi designación como principal orador me obliga a presentar alguna novedad en el por otra parte bien conocido ámbito de los estudios sobre el ex-librismo hispano, me he decidido a reflexionar con vosotros sobre cuál sea el primer ex-libris portugués.-o, mejor dicho cuál no es ese primer ex-libris portugués, aunque se haya venido considerando tal durante decenios-. Antecedentes, precedentes y contexto histórico Recordaré brevemente que las señales de propiedad de un libro-manuscritas o sigilográficas-son muy antiguas, y se remontan al antiguo Egipto, continuándose a lo largo de los siglos con ese mismo uso. Así, por ejemplo en Baviera, hacia el año de 1188,
De entre las altas instituciones históricas del Estado, una de las más peculiares es sin duda la ... more De entre las altas instituciones históricas del Estado, una de las más peculiares es sin duda la Casa del Rey, que de ser el centro político, administrativo y cultural del reino en la época bajomedieval y moderna, se configuró en la edad contemporánea-es decir constitucional-como un organismo ciertamente singular y aparentemente no dotado de poderes, pero que sin duda alguna ha sido siempre y es aún hoy un verdadero poder en la sombra. Porque, para no pecar de ingenuidad, hemos de reconocer que las cortes contemporáneas, incluso en los regímenes no monárquicos-o quizá más aún en esos precisamente-, aunque sean tan solo un vestigio de lo que otrora fueron, conservan todavía un instrumento de poder verdaderamente grandioso: la cercanía al príncipe, cuya importancia política ya fue percibida y perfectamente descrita por Castiglione 1 , y que inevitablemente suele derivar en lo que desde antiguo se dio en llamar la privanza.
Los estudios sobre los grandes linajes y casas nobiliarias, integrados en las actuales corrientes... more Los estudios sobre los grandes linajes y casas nobiliarias, integrados en las actuales corrientes historiográficas solo desde hace medio siglo, se han dedicado sobre todo a su respectiva participación en los sucesos políticos de cada momento histórico. Sin embargo, los historiadores actuales son conscientes de que los grandes y señores que regían vastos estados y señoríos, no eran individuos aislados, sino-son palabras del profesor Ladero Quesada-nudos principales de intersección de redes complejas de relaciones familiares, solidaridades y clientelas, en cuyo mantenimiento jugaban un papel de primer orden y sobre los que se basaban para ejercer el poder y asegurar la estabilidad ... de un sistema de sociedad estamental (1). Como acertadamente señala la profesora Beceiro Pita, el estudio de los círculos de servidores es del más alto interés para comprender la posición de la nobleza como élite de poder durante la Plena y Baja Edad Media-y durante la Edad Moderna, añado yo-, aunque ciertamente resulte muy complejo porque engloba varios campos temáticos: las relaciones de parentesco, el sistema de dominio señorial, el encumbramiento de caballeros y letrados, la participación de las clientelas en las luchas políticas, y la organización territorial y doméstica de la respectiva Casa, entre otros (1). La familia de Villapecellín, que durante tres siglos y medio estuvo al servicio de los Duques de Alba de Tormes-servicios documentados desde 1445 hasta 1780, por lo menos-, es un ejemplo acabado del sistema de clientes y criados que era consustancial a las grandes Casas nobiliarias, imitadoras en todo-a su propia escala-de la Casa Real. Un sistema que, a pesar de los avances historiográficos del último cuarto de siglo (1) , ciertamente no nos es todavía bien conocido, entre otras cosas porque las fuentes rara vez son completas, y casi siempre fragmentarias. Pero, sobre todo, porque hasta ahora este asunto se ha abordado siempre desde el punto de vista del señor o patrón (de cuya administración y casa se conservan, en su caso, los documentos), y no
