Its epidemiology is difficult to assess, although official registries are available in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico. Methodology/Principal findings Using official statistics, we assessed trends in NC hospitalization rates during 1998–2019 in Brazil and Ecuador, during 2004–2019 in Mexico, and during 2009–2019 in Colombia. We also assessed the trend in NC mortality in Brazil (1998–2019), the trend in hospitalizations for NC in a Mexican tertiary-level hospital (Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía [INNN]; 1995–2019), and in Mexican primary care ambulatory clinics (1995–2019). Associations between NC hospitalization rates and the human development index (HDI) were also examined. In Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico, statistically significant decreases in NC hospitalization rates were observed...

In‐house assays for the diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2)... more In‐house assays for the diagnosis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) by quantitative reverse‐transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR), are feasible alternatives, particularly in developing countries. Cycle threshold (Ct) values obtained by qRT‐PCR were compared with clinical and laboratory data from saliva of inpatients with COVID‐19 and asymptomatic health workers (AHW) were studied. Saliva specimens from 58 inpatients confirmed by qRT‐PCR for SARS‐CoV‐2 using nasopharyngeal specimens, and 105 AHW were studied by qRT‐PCR using three sets of primers for the N (N1, N2, and N3) gene of SARS‐CoV‐2, according to the CDC Diagnostic Panel protocol, showing a positivity of 88% for inpatients and 8% for AHW. Bivariate analysis revealed an association between Ct < 38.0 values for N2 and mechanical ventilation assistance among patients (p = .013). In addition, values of aspartate‐transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, and ferritin showed significant corr...

The pathogenic role of Blastocystis is controversial, because it is frequently found not only in individuals with enteric symptoms but also in healthy and asymptomatic subjects. Furthermore, there are few studies of blastocistosis in Mexico. To assess the frequency of Blastocystis sp. in IBS patients using molecular techniques and to describe its phylogenetic relationship with sequences of other countries. IBS patients according to Rome III criteria were enrolled. In all patients evaluations included: colonoscopies, coproparasitoscopic studies, coproculture, fecal virus screening. PCR and sequencing for Blastocystis sp. were also performed. We recruited 11 men and 51 women with a mean age of 45.6 (SD ± 15.7) years. Eighty-six percent of the IBS patients presented a normal colonoscopy, 8% showed polyps and 6% diverticular disease. Blastoc...
The overall proportion of sera with antibodies against cyticercus antigens in 3226 serum samples ... more The overall proportion of sera with antibodies against cyticercus antigens in 3226 serum samples collected among the Indian rural population in the proximity of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México is 0.49. The proportion of positive sera varied from 0.4 to 7.6% inversely with the number of inhabitants in the community. The global proportion of positive sera in Chiapas being considerably lower than that expected from the autopsy frequency of brain cysticercosis in México City (1.4-3.6%), it is perhaps indicative of different epidemiologic dynamics in rural and urban areas.

Liver hydatid disease is the most frequent hepatic parasitic disease in developed countries and is considered practically absent in Mexico. In this paper we report identification, clinical management, and epidemiologic parasitologic, and molecular biological studies of an autochthonous case of hydatid disease in Mexico. Hepatic cyst was identified by imaging techniques. The patient received cestocidal treatment and the parasite was excised by laparoscopy. It was not possible to identify the origin of the Echinococcus strain neither by epidemiologic studies performed in the patient's household nor by RAPD pattern obtained with DNA of the protoscolices. Infection of a dog with protoscolices was not successful probably because they were damaged by the cestocidal drug. Care should be taken in the future to identify other possible autochthonous patients harboring liver hydatid cysts to treat them in an adequate and timely fashion, and ...

In pigs and young people many parasites were usually found, but this was seldom the case in adult humans. These parasites were small and located mainly in the parenchyma and the subarachnoid space; no calcified cysticerci were found. In contrast, in adult humans cysticerci were heterogeneous in appearance and distribution. The brain of the pigs showed no evidence of inflammatory reaction while young people had oedema, enhancement and hydrocephalus; in contrast, adults showed diverse tomographic characteristics of brain response. Thus, the disease has at least 2 different forms. It may be mild with short development and parasites of similar appearance, as occurs in young hosts. In contrast, a long lasting disease occurs in adults, with diverse tomographic, neurological and parasitological features.
