Accurate, easy-to-perform and inexpensive diagnostic tools are needed for detection. 3D test consists of using a carbapenem susceptible organism as an indicator of the presence of a carbapenemase in a cellular extract. To detect carbapenemases, a sonicated extract of the tested organism is placed in a groove on the marginal zones of the sensidisk. Zone distortion indicates presence of the enzyme. No data regarding the sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPE), positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) have been described for this test when compared to PCR as the gold standard. Methods: During 2007, 278 clinical isolates of Pa and Ab were sent from 14 tertiary Colombian hospitals to CIDEIM for further studies. MICs were performed by CLSI-approved broth microdilution. Carbapenem-resistant or intermediate Pa and Ab isolates were...

This involves the generation of thermal facial signatures and templates. A thermal infrared camera with reasonable sensitivity provides the ability to image superficial blood vessels on the human skin. The experiment consists of image processing techniques used on thermal infrared images captured using the Merlin™ InSb MWIR camera from FLIR systems with a thermal sensitivity of 0.025°C at 30°C ambient temperature. For the purpose of this experiment thermal images were obtained from 13 volunteers, they were asked to sit straight in front of the camera and a snapshot was taken of their frontal view. This process was repeated at least three more times during different days and times of the day to take into consideration subtle variations that may occur. The thermal infrared images were then processed to extract facial vasculature featur...

For this reason, enzymes from starch-dependent insects are targets for insecticidal control. PF2 (Olneya tesota) is a lectin that is toxic to Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) larvae. In this study, we evaluated recognition of the PF2 lectin to α-amylases from Z. subfasciatus midgut and the effect of PF2 on α-amylase activity. PF2 caused a decrease of total amylase activity in vitro. Subsequently, several α-amylase isoforms were isolated from insect midgut tissues using ion exchange chromatography. Three enzyme isoforms were verified by an in-gel assay for amylase activity; however, only one isoform was recognized by antiamylase serum and PF2. The identity of this Z. subfasciatus α-amylase was confirmed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The findings strongly suggest that a glycosylated α-amylase isoform from larval Z...

Male hamsters of the Syria strain were intramuscularly injected into each of the hind paws with two doses of Y. enterocolitica LPS O:8 or O:5. The measurement of swelling using a plethysmometer, the analysis of histological changes by routine techniques and the kinetics of LPS-specific antibodies and autoantibodies evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were performed. LPS O:8 was demonstrated to be more arthritogenic than LPS O:5, inducing acute arthritis on day 3 post-injection as well as more significant and longer lasting joint swelling after a second dose. LPS O:8 caused severe histopathological changes in the joints. Important LPS O:8-specific IgG responses and antibodies against type I and II collagen were observed. LPS O:8 administered alone has arthritogenic power and induces activation of autoreactive clones....

The research premise is to design specialized algorithms that would extract vasculature information, create a thermal facial signature and identify the individual. The proposed algorithm is fully integrated and consolidates the critical steps of feature extraction through the use of morphological operators, registration using the Linear Image Registration Tool and matching through unique similarity measures designed for this task. The novel approach at developing a thermal signature template using four images taken at various instants of time ensured that unforeseen changes in the vasculature over time did not affect the biometric matching process as the authentication process relied only on consistent thermal features. Thirteen subjects were used for testing the developed technique on an in-house thermal imaging system. The matching using the similarity meas...
