Paper written for the course "Digital Construction" by Rosemary Woodcock, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, 2005.
The topic for the creative essay was as follows:
In 'Memento', Christopher Nolan casts doubt on the reliability of written texts, photographs, science, character judgement and memory. Based on your understanding of the film, write a short story from the point of view of a police detective using the following scenario: Leonard Shelby has checked out of the Discount Inn and your job is to develop a reasoned murder theory based on evidence he has left behind, using what you imagine to be a hard-boiled policeman's voice. You could in part use his journal entry, or imagine a report to a court. In your critical appendix, consider how and why Nolan's film prevents the audience from doing likewise.
