The following parameters were evaluated: TiO2 concentration, dye concentration, effect of H2O2, pH effect and recycling of TiO2. TiO2 Degussa P25 was tested at concentrations from 0g L -1 to 1 g L -1 . The dye concentration was from 30 mgL -1 to 120 mgL -1 and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was 0.3x10 -3 to 6x10 -2 mol L -1 . The pH variation was from 2 to 11 and TiO2 recycling was performed with 5 cycles. Samples were treated for two hours with artificial irradiation (125W mercury vapor lamp) and samples were collected at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. The photodegradation of the samples was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The efficiency of photocatalytic degradation increased with increasing the amount of TiO2. The effect of H2O2 was beneficial for the degradation of the three dyes. The results indicate that the photocatalytic d...
The tidal variability of the Minho and Douro lower estuaries (NW Portugal) water column structure... more The tidal variability of the Minho and Douro lower estuaries (NW Portugal) water column structure was assessed at the semi-diurnal and fortnightly time scales under two contrasting seasonal river flow scenarios during the summer of 2005 and winter of 2006. Sediment fluxes inferred from calibrated ADCP acoustic backscatter revealed that, during spring tides and low runoff conditions, both estuaries act as sinks instead of sources of sediments into the inner shelf. Sediment export occurred during neaps, in both estuaries, when the river flow values were high enough to counteract the effect of the entering flood. No evidence of coarse sediment export into the inner shelf that would eventually nourish the littoral system could be inferred from these datasets.

Triclocarban (TCC) is an antibacterial agent found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products ... more Triclocarban (TCC) is an antibacterial agent found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP). It is potentially bioaccumulative and an endocrine disruptor, being classified as a contaminant of emerging concern (CEC). In normal uses, approximately 96% of the used TCC can be washed down the drain going into the sewer system and eventually enter in the aquatic environment. UV photolysis can be used to photodegrade TCC and ecotoxicity assays could indicate the photodegradation efficiency, since the enormous structural diversity of photoproducts and their low concentrations do not always allow to identify and quantify them. In this work, the TCC was efficiently degraded by UVC direct photolysis and the ecotoxicity of the UV-treated mixtures was investigated. Bioassays indicates that Daphnia similis (48 h EC50 = 0.044 μM) was more sensitive to TCC than Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (72 h IC50 = 1.01 μM). TCC and its photoproducts caused significant effects on Eisenia andrei b...

This is a potentially serious illness, with lethality between 5 and 40% of cases. The most effective preventive vaccine is constituted by the attenuated virus strain 17D, developed in 1937. It is considered safe and effective, conferring protection in more than 90% in 10 years. Adverse effects are known as mild reactions (allergies, transaminases transient elevation, fever, headache) and severe (visceral and neurotropic disease related to vaccine). However, little is known about its potential to induce autoimmune responses. This systematic review aims to identify the occurrence of autoinflammatory diseases related to 17D vaccine administration. Six studies were identified describing 13 possible cases. The diseases were Guillain-Barré syndrome, multiple sclerosis, multiple points evanescent syndrome, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, autoimmune hepatitis, and Kawasaki disease. The data suggest that 17D va...
