Facial expression recognition of the elderly is an important aid to better care them, according to their state of mind, although it can be a difficult task because their expressions might not be as easily perceived as those from younger persons. We proposed a model to classify the facial expressions of the elderly, presenting the differences between facial expression recognition in the elder and in other age group, as well as methods to surpass these difficulties. Viola Jones with Haar Features was used to extract the faces and Gabor Filter to extract the facial characteristics. These characteristics are classified using a Multiclass Support Vector Machine. We got an accuracy of 90.32%, 84.61%and 66.6%, when detecting the neutral state, happiness and sadness respectively in the elderly. In the other age group, we got an accuracy of 95.24%, 88.57%, and 80%, while detecting the neutral, happiness, and sadness states and concluded that aging influences negatively the facial expressions recognition tasks.

They observe their ”audience”, see their reactions and adapt the way, the gestures, the posture and the content of the story, to better respond to the audience’s reactions. Clearly, this adaptation is however not only in the content of the story but also on the way the story is told, thus the facial expressions and the gestures of the storyteller. In this paper we describe a synthetic character that tells stories interactively, discussing how the adaptation to the audience is done through the content of the story and the associated expressions and gestures of the character.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive middleware, namely AFIrM, developed in Haskell, a purely functional language whose features like algebraic data types, no reflection, and control of side effects, provide a new approach for developing this kind of system. The evaluation of the proposed middleware concentrated on measure the impact caused by the use of functional features on its execution. We intend that developers of Haskell applications use the proposed middleware as a solution to deal with distribution and adaptation issues, and also to show that purely functional programming can facilitate the development of adaptive middleware systems, and hence should be considered as an alternative to traditional approaches.

Its environmental presence provides the bacterial resistance enhancement and disturbance in aquatic life. The biocarbon is an organic carbon compound obtained by biomass pyrolisis at 300oC to 750oC under low oxygen environment. It is an effective adsorbent derived from agricultural and industrial solid biomass also frequently used to remove various pollutants, including dyes, pesticides, organic compounds and heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The importance of this natural material rises as low cost abundant and renewable alternative to activated carbon used on wastewater treatment application. Several technologies are employed to modify crude precursors on biocarbon preparation including chemical, physical and biological treatments with the addition of functional groups. The raw biomass material also provides some radicals and humic acids with promising water adsorbent resu...

Our results are based on numerous in-depth semi-structured interviews and fieldwork conducted with both female and male participants in these programmes. The doctors we interviewed have concluded medical missions in countries such as Brazil, Venezuela, Angola and Ghana. We argue that examining Cuban medical internationalism from a feminist IR perspective gives us insights into the nuanced status of feminism within Cuban civil society, how international employment impacts family relations both positively and negatively, and how time spent abroad provides transformative experiences. This paper seeks to contribute to greater conversations on power, agency and gender in the global South.

Due to these properties it may have the potential to decrease enteric methane (CH) from ruminants when included in the diet. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of oil mechanically extracted from the fruit pulp of tucumã on fermentation characteristics, CH production and the microbial community using the rumen stimulation technique. Treatments consisted of a control diet (forage:concentrate; 70:30), and tucumã oil included at 0.5 or 1.0% (v/v). Addition of tucumã oil linearly decreased ( < 0.01) dry matter disappearance. Total gas (mL/d) and carbon dioxide (CO) production (mL/d, mL/g DM) were unaffected ( ≥ 0.36) to increasing addition of tucumã oil where 0.5% (v/v) of Tucumã oil numerically increased both variables. Acetate and butyrate percentages of total VFA were linearly decreased ( ≤ 0.01) and propionate and valerate p...

Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was used to test the correlation between the magnitude of the parameter and its standard deviation. Birth defects are a result of both genetic and environmental factors, but a multifactorial etiology has been more frequently observed. Here, we address the environmental causes of birth defects - or teratogens - as a public health issue and present their mechanisms of action, categories and their respective maternal-fetal deleterious effects. We also present a survey from 2008 to 2013 of Brazilian cases involving congenital anomalies (annual average of 20,205), fetal deaths (annual average of 1,530), infant hospitalizations (annual average of 82,452), number of deaths of hospitalized infants (annual average of 2,175), and the average cost of hospitalizations (annual cost of $7,758). Moreover, we report on Brazilian cases of teratogenesis due to the recent Zika virus infection, and to the use of misoprostol, thalidomide, alcohol and illicit drugs...

Well logs and core data revealed numerous challenges for the petrophysical description of this formation. Rapidly changing depositional environments and diagenetic effects caused heterogeneities in grain size and sorting within clean sands. Consequently, gamma ray and conventional porosity logs have little sensitivity to rock quality variations. Secondly, an influx of meteoric water into the reservoir rocks decreased formation water salinities which adds uncertainties to the estimation of fluid saturations from resistivity logs. Finally, gas-oil contacts are present in some reservoirs where log-based in-situ hydrocarbon typing is of great practical value. The introduction of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logs has successfully mitigated these issues as evidenced by petrophysical interpretations and formation testing in the area's exploration and delineation wells. ...
