We propose that the external argument of the impersonal is a silent pronoun of DP category (pro) that must be interpreted as [+human]. This argument is located at the specifier of Voice. Additionally, we also argue that Voice is defective in impersonals and that this explains the restricted case and agreement relations of the construction. Since Voice is defective, both the external and the internal arguments must Agree with T(ense), which causes the person restriction on the internal argument.

This chapter carefully examines the event configurations in which ergative case and agreement are licensed in Basque by extending the discussion beyond the domain of verbal predicates to include non-verbal ones (nominal or adjectival). The most influential hypotheses concerning the status of ergative case and agreement in Basque are critically reviewed and their connection to more general approaches to ergativity is underlined. The chapter offers a synthetic view of the most relevant theoretical and descriptive contributions realized in the area of Basque ergativity during the last decennia.

Ergative subjects can be holders of verbal states, and, in some cases, subjects of non-verbal stative predicates. I argue that in non-verbal stative predicates, termed bare analytic predicates , the ergative argument is introduced by a head of central coincidence. It is proposed that this head is responsible for the spell out of a have auxiliary ( a la Kayne 1993) and is also related to the ergative marking of the subject. In the last sections, this analysis is generalized to verbal states and analytic eventive verbs headed by the - tu suffix, claiming that the ergative subject is always introduced by a head of central coincidence.

Adger Ramchand's (2006) work on Scottish Gaelic is one exception. In this language, there are nouns that express psych states, and the experiencer and theme arguments are shown as prepositional arguments of these nouns. In Basque too, there are psych nouns, such as laket, and they are found with postpositional phrases that are interpreted as the themes of the psychological state expressed by the predicate. The experiencer, on the other hand, can occur either with absolutive case, ergative case or dative case. In this paper, we show that, like in Scottish Gaelic, the locative theme forms a constituent together with the psych noun in Basque. On the contrary, the experiencer does not belong to this constituent, as it is introduced by a functional head that is higher than the Pred(ication) ph...

This dissertation analyses the subeventive decomposition and aspectual interpretation of events, ... more This dissertation analyses the subeventive decomposition and aspectual interpretation of events, paying special attention to derived predicates in Basque, like dantzatu ‘to dance’ from dantza ‘dance’, amets egin ‘to dream’ from amets ‘dream’, etxeratu ‘to go home’ from etxe-ra ‘to home’ and amatu ‘to become a mother’ from ama ‘mother’. The discussion is mainly concerned with the syntactic configuration that represents the predicates’ event structure and the lexicalization of these configurations by means of actual words. In this dissertation, it is assumed that predicates can be decomposed into more basic components (e.g. Levin & Rappaport Hovav 1995) and that this decomposition is syntactically represented (Hale & Keyser 1993). To be more precise, in the analysis made in this dissertation, it is assumed that the events conveyed by predicates consist of smaller subevents (Harley 1995 2005, Cuervo 2003, Folli & Harley 2005, Ramchand 2008) (which can be either processes or states) and...

Oro har, erabilera horiek ez dira estandarrean onartzen edo gomendatzen, baina hiztun askorentzat oso arruntak dira. Erabilera horietan, aditzok adiera estatiboa daukatela erakutsiko dut, literaturan erabiltzen diren hainbat test sintaktikoren bitartez. Gainera, eztabaidatuko dut erabilera berri horiek hizkuntz ukipenarekin izan dezaketen zerikusia, euskarazko eta gaztelaniazko pareko formak alderatuz.
