A 12-year-old Indian boy, Fitzpatrick skin type V, came to our attention for a growing blue-grey ... more A 12-year-old Indian boy, Fitzpatrick skin type V, came to our attention for a growing blue-grey plaque on his right buttock (Figure 1). The plaque had a tense-elastic consistency, maximum diameters 10 × 12 mm, and had been present for about three years. The patient was otherwise healthy and personal and family history was negative for skin cancers. No other pigmented lesions or lymphadenopathies were detected during physical examination. Neural-network quantum states have been successfully used to study a variety of lattice and conti... more Neural-network quantum states have been successfully used to study a variety of lattice and continuous-space problems. Despite a great deal of general methodological developments, representing fermionic matter is however still early research activity. Here we present an extension of neural-network quantum states to model interacting fermionic problems. Borrowing techniques from quantum simulation, we directly map fermionic degrees of freedom to spin ones, and then use neural-network quantum states to perform electronic structure calculations. For several diatomic molecules in a minimal basis set, we benchmark our approach against widely used coupled cluster methods, as well as many-body variational states. On some test molecules, we systematically improve upon coupled cluster methods and Jastrow wave functions, reaching chemical accuracy or better. Finally, we discuss routes for future developments and improvements of the methods presented.
The excess incidence of lung cancers observed in many metal mines probably is not only correlated... more The excess incidence of lung cancers observed in many metal mines probably is not only correlated with radioactivity but also with the inhaled dusts. In an attempt to determine a possible mechanism of carcinogenicity related to the surface activity of dusts, using the spin-trapping agent and ESR spectroscopy, one can demonstrate that some mineral dusts from iron ore mines are very active in an oxidative process in aqueous medium, implying the formation of radical oxygen species on reducing surface sites of the solid. This reducing surface activity of the dusts depends on the presence of Fe2+ ion in the lattice and on the process of activation and passivation of the surface sites. The more simple process of activation is the dissolution of the oxidized coating on the particle surface. Among the oxides, oxyhydroxides, carbonates, and silicates, the magnesium-iron phyllosilicates (chlorite, biotite, berthierine) appear the most active. Streptococcus sanguis is the major causative organism of infective (bacterial) endocarditis but, ... more Streptococcus sanguis is the major causative organism of infective (bacterial) endocarditis but, surprisingly, almost nothing is known about how it induces endocardial inflammation. In earlier studies we have shown that many bacteria secrete potent cytokine-inducing or -inhibiting proteins. We have therefore isolated the material secreted by S. sanguis grown on blood agar or in broth culture and have tested its ability to induce human peripheral blood monocytes to synthesize pro-inflammatory cytokines. The activation of monocytes by the secreted components of S. sanguis was almost totally blocked by heat and trypsin treatment but not by the lipopolysaccharide-inactivating antibiotic, polymyxin B, suggesting that activity is due to secreted proteins. The activity of the secreted material was significantly reduced by anti-CD14 monoclonal antibodies suggesting that the active protein (or proteins) was binding to the CD14/Toll-like receptor (TLR)4 complex. Fractionation of the secreted proteins by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) identified two proteins as being responsible for the majority of the cytokine induction: a manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase and a 190 kDa protein, which could not be sequenced, but which was neither CshA nor the PI/II proteins. These proteins, or the receptors to which they bind, may be therapeutic targets and may allow the development of adjunctive therapies to prevent endocardial damage during the often prolonged treatment of infective endocarditis with antibiotics. In addition, blocking of CD14 may have some therapeutic benefit.
Nocturnal pH, acid output and volume of gastric secretion have been measured in a group of patien... more Nocturnal pH, acid output and volume of gastric secretion have been measured in a group of patients who were referred for surgery because of a poor clinical response to cimetidine. Patients were studied after no treatment, cimetidine 1 g/day and proximal gastric vagotomy. Although pH and acid output were controlled better with cimetidine than no treatment this was not true for volume of secretion. Vagotomy was significantly better than cimetidine in controlling pH, acid output and volume of gastric secretion. The results suggest that cimetidine non-responders should have a good result from proximal gastric vagotomy, making more radical forms of gastric surgery unnecessary.
