Stage one provides accommodation support places to over 100 people with complex mental health problems and high levels of psychiatric disability; the preliminary findings in this report suggest that this stage of the initiative is achieving most of its aims and working towards others.

SDR is a NSW Government initiative which aims to improve the coordination of, and communication among, government agencies to improve service delivery to vulnerable people. A multidisciplinary team of researchers at Western Sydney University was commissioned to evaluate SDR in Western Sydney, with particular reference to Making a Safe Home (MaSH), Vulnerable Families (VF), and the Middle Years Project (MYP), as well as the governance processes themselves. MaSH supports families where there is neglect of children and a risk of their removal to Out of Home Care (OOHC). VF aligns resources across and within WSLHD and FACS to improve health outcomes by responding to the needs of children and families in a timely way. MYP supports children from two primary schools in the region in their transition to high school. Western Sydney SDR was evaluated using realist evaluation

Migrant and refugee communities are often at-risk of poor health outcomes, facing barriers to health service attendance including cultural, language, limited health literacy, discrimination and unmet psychosocial needs. ‘Integrated health-social care hubs’ are physical hubs where health and social services are co-located, with shared referral pathways and care navigation.AimOur study will evaluate the impact, implementation and cost-benefit of the First 2000 Days Care Connect (FDCC) integrated hub model for pregnant migrant and refugee women and their infants.Materials and methodsThis study has three components. Component 1 is a non-randomised controlled trial to compare the FDCC model of care with usual care. This trial will allocate eligible women to intervention and control groups based on their proximity to the Hub sites. Outcome measur...

However, despite evidenced shortfalls in general practice-based sexual health care, the PN role in sexual health appears underdeveloped. Evaluation of New South Wales Sexually Transmissible Infections Programs Unit GP Project provided an opportunity to canvass views of GPs and PNs regarding PNs and sexual health care. Methods A purposively sampled group of 10 PNs and nine GPs were interviewed. Interviews were transcribed and analysed thematically. Results The extent and nature of PN-GP teamwork in sexual health care was variable, influenced largely by GP recognition and support of the PN role in sexual health care. Other important factors were personal PN interest and supportive practice systems. Discussion The role played by PNs and a team approach to sexual health care in Australian general practice is underdeveloped. Increased recognition and support of PN roles in sexual health is needed, including supportive practice systems that facilitate team care

The Brilliance Group is a community of research practitioners from Australian universities who voluntarily work together to locate, understand and spread what is brilliant in our healthcare system. The Brilliance Group Community of Practice (CoP) evolved around a shared knowledge-domain of health management. This paper explores how using an unfamiliar research paradigm, dissimilar expertise and shared leadership have shaped the Brilliance Group. The Brilliance Group operates in an unconventional research space, deals with an underappreciated research topic and works with undervalued sources of evidence in healthcare. The paper explores how the Brilliance Group CoP presents an innovative approach to researching healthcare with potential to provide break-through knowledge.

Despite its focus on and interest in the market sector, the neoliberalist agenda has permeated health care (Martinez and Garcia, 1997). It has altered perceptions of effective management from the health of the patient to the health of the organization — a change that has been witnessed in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia (Harden, 2000; Terris, 1999; Donelan et al., 1999).

Literature describes patient journey modelling and visual simulation as discrete activities. This paper suggests that their combination and their impact on translating knowledge to practitioners are greater than the sum of the two technologies. The test-bed is ambulatory care and the goal is to determine if this approach can improve health services delivery, workflow, and patient outcomes and satisfaction. The multidisciplinary research team is comprised of expertise in patient journey modelling, simulation, and knowledge translation.

The management of unplanned surgery is a critical and strategic function of operating theatres. It is also an activity that is prone to conflict, and the queuing of patients for theatre time is common. Despite this strategic importance and the operational challenges that are encountered, there remain inherent problems with the current management of unplanned surgery in NSW public hospitals. Consequently, some patient health outcomes may be adversely affected, not only for those in need of unplanned surgery, but also those awaiting elective surgery. This poses a serious concern, implicating personal, social, and economic costs

The empirical materials were inductively and deductively analysed by researchers of positive organisational scholarship in healthcare who drew on Bright’s (2009) comparison of depreciating and appreciating organisational dynamics. A framework was devised comprised of appreciative, depreciative, and hybrid dynamics. The hybrid dynamics represent a departure from Bright’s framework, while the other two dynamics were considerably expanded. The framework enables practitioners and scholars to examine, understand, and promote positive organisational experiences through both research and practice
