I am an internationally awarded TV writer/producer/director with decades of experience making programmes on historical and cultural topics. In the 1960s I spent five years broadcasting for the BBC in Russian to Soviet audiences. I am the author of articles and books on Russia and the Soviet Union. The first, set in the weeks before and during the Moscow Olympics of 1980, deals with a Philosophy graduate's attempts to carry out instructions from his unseen Russian Orthodox mentor. 'June' is three slightly interconnected stories set in the months leading up to the June 1941 invasion of the USSR by Nazi troops. The work poses the question whether personal morality affects national destiny.

Caught illegally selling a pair of jeans, he was obliged by the Soviet security services to sign up to work for them. On return to Britain he revealed all to British spooks and was paid by them to undertake occasional tasks in East Europe
