The objective of the study is to explore coping strategies and self- perceived parental competence, in mothers of infant born moderately and severely preterm and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The study involved a group of 16 mothers of moderately preterm children (weeks' gestational age: mean=34, SD=2 and birth weight: mean=2000 g, SD=200 g) and a group of 14 mothers of severely preterm children (weeks' gestational age: mean=29, SD=2 and birth weight: mean=1700 g, SD=350 g). The following instruments were used with mothers to investigate focus areas of research: Coping Orientation to the Problems Experienced-New Italian Version (COPE-NVI), to analyse coping strategies of mothers, and a Q-sort, a self report on maternal competence. Data did not show statistically significant differences between the two groups of mothers, both in regard to considered coping strate...

This time can persist and could cause an atypical development. - the nature of the trauma is explained as an “aggregate” between organic trauma and psychic trauma. In this sense, the study underlines how this aggregate gives life to a “psychoneurobiological displacement”. - the Traumatic Developmental Disorder as an often irreversible damage, which becomes the primary focus compared to the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, with which it is in a comorbidity relationship. The paper then presents the procedural model of a...

The predictive effect of specific women’s psychological variables will be explored as well. Design and methods: This between groups study involved 85 women with pregnancy at risk who underwent the fetal echocardiography, and 83 women who were about to undergo the morphological scan. The tools employed were: the Prenatal Attachment Inventory (P.A.I.) to explore the maternal-fetal attachment; the Maternity Social Support Scale to investigate the woman perception of being socially supported during pregnancy; both the Big Five Questionnaire and the FACES III to explore the personality traits of pregnant women and their perception of their couple relationship functioning. Findings: The outcomes of ANOVA do not show statistically significant differences between the two groups of the mothers-to-be with regard to the scores of the P.A.I. (F = .017; p = .897; η 2 = .000),...

It can influences the relationship they structure with themselves and their future children. Sometimes this examination can result in a diagnosis of fetal congenital heart disease. This event could be critical for the psychological representation of the child, made by mother, pushing her to an emotional blockage or hyper involvement (Righetti, Di Bernardo, Maggino, 2008) . In continuity with specific studies on this topic (ibidem), this research study investigates the configuration of prenatal attachment bond, seen as a measure of “the unique affective relationship that develops between a woman and the child in her belly” (Muller, 1993). This concept refers to representation of mother with the relationship with the fetus (Palacio, Espasa, 1991), thoughts, emotions, behaviors, representing the interaction and the affective involvement with the child (Cranley, 1981). This representation can be influenced by specific psychological variables related to personality of mother and this research study investigates the relation between prenatal attachment and configuration of personality in mother, according to the model of Big Five Theory . Method The objective of the research was : to verify the quality of maternal- fetal attachment and the possible correlations between this and the factors that characterize the personality of the pregnant . The research involved 40 pregnant women (average age: 31,4; SD: 2,4; gestation week: average= 22; SD= 2) undergoing fetal echocardiography, in consideration of a medium to high risk of pregnancy. Assessment instrument : Prenatal Attachment Inventory (P.A.I.) Italian version (Della Vedova et al., 2008). This self-report questionnaire consists of 21 items, with Likert response scale, ranging from “almost never” (1 point) to “almost always” (4 point) and investigates the mother-fetus relationship. Big Five Questionnaire – 2 (Caprara G.V. et al., 2007). This questionnaire consists of 134 item, which investigates 5 fundamental dimensions of personality ( Energy, Friendliness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Openness ) . Results The data were analyzed using descriptive and nonparametric statistics; specifically, we applied the \u3c1 Spearman correlation coefficient, to detect possible correlations between prenatal and personality factors. Results show the presence of a good quality of prenatal attachment relationship (medium-high level = 95%) . In reference to personality factors, the study indicate high levels in : Energy (M= 41,8), Friendliness (M=40,4) and Conscientiousness (M= 41,4). Instead, lower levels were found in : Emotional stability (M=38) and Openness (M=37,1). Regarding the results in reference to possible correlations between level of prenatal attachment and personality traits, wasn’t detected any statistically significant relationship between these two variables. Discussion These findings appear to be in discontinuity with a predominance of studies that shows pregnant women at risk would be difficult to bond with the fetus. These results confirm those contributions that emphasize the frequent occurrence of high prenatal attachment before the third trimester (Caccia et al. 1991), when the perception of the first movements of the fetus increases the development of attachment (Cannella, 2005). The absence of significant correlation between level of prenatal attachment and personality traits, and the presence of an attachment to the fetus even in pregnancy risky conditions, lead us to consider the importance of the impact of screening on these women at this phase of gestation and promote new studies in future

It has been assumed that the relationship between siblings may have a moderating effect on the negative impact that asthma has on child’s development. Seventy children suffering from chronic asthma have been involved: 40 children with siblings (experimental group) and 30 sibling-free children (control group). The children with asthma have exhibited higher levels of self-esteem in comparison with the sibling-free children. The results of the study, at the clinical significance level, highlight how meaningful could be the involvement of healthy siblings to support the development, and to ease the compliance of children suffering from asthma. The outcomes have confirmed the supportive valence of sibship for the self-esteem of the children with asthma.
