The paper first describes the character of responsive cohesion and examines its relation to the literature on preferences in urban aesthetics. The body of the paper critically examines how responsive cohesion is evident in five urban sites in the city of Helsinki, Finland. These sites range from mixed-use developments to individual buildings inserted into the urban fabric. The paper shows how a quality of responsive cohesion crosses boundaries of aesthetic value, functional value and ethics.

This is normally done through institution-wide survey of student satisfaction. But are lectures the only source of knowledge in the process of understanding a particular architecture, for example? As we understand, this is not the case. Interestingly enough, as the attached survey shows, they are not even the preferred ones by most. It could easily be established that architectural information has undergone various manners of representations in publications; most, if not all of which are author-driven in contents and structures. To whatever extent that these publications may have been relied upon as other sources of information and knowledge, it is unusual that there appears to be an absence of assessment of the effectiveness they assume to deliver. It is often found that in such p...

Rapid technological change tremendously affects the modes and techniques of communication media necessitating a reassessment of these vehicles. This paper suggests that if the medium should continue to be the ?massage? (McLuhan, 1967), it is imperative that we should understand the implications our choice and use of various media for communication of specific data, especially in relation to a targeted audience. The paper presents the results and analyses of an online user survey which considers the use of currently available media, their roles and performance in the delivery of information of architectural works. It proposes suggestions for the manner and reasons these factors fashion users? preferences. It also highlights several aspects of architectural data (e.g. forms, lighting, materials, etc) as well as those of the respective media used to represent them...

The authors argue that original thinking, creativity and innovation are supported by recognition and understanding of the interplay of the two apparently opposing concepts of rules and contingency.

The radical ‘Troppo Style’ of their houses designed in the 1980s blur edges between indoors and outdoors, formality and informality, and enclosure and openness. In this paper a corpus of ten of those houses is examined through the lens of philosopher Warwick Fox's concept of responsive cohesion. This is a unique quality of the relations between the internal components of a ‘thing’ and also between the ‘thing’ and its contexts. The houses are exemplary in demonstrating this quality of mutual and subtle response through the interactions between their form and local environmental and cultural contexts, including the idea of responsible hedonism as a design principle. The research utilises original documents, site visits and interviews with stakeholders, particularly the architects and the residents. The outcomes reveal interlocking links between the dwelling, the place, the values of the architects and their c...

The paper examines the attitudes and judgments about design that they represent, and how the winning entry has been modified for construction. An appendix provides a list of features claimed to promote the ‘sustainability’ of entries. The results present a picture of current thinking on the nature of affordable green housing, and provide a useful comparison for architects approaching their own projects and competition entries.

This paper examines the different natures of the window design information that can be provided through mathematical simulation and optimization models and considers some approaches to choosing a solution.
