Sh. Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences continues to publish the works ... more Sh. Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences continues to publish the works of the famous Tatar-Turkish historian Akdes Nigmet Kurat. There has been published the second book "Turkic Tribes and States in the Volga and Northern Black Sea Regions in the 4th–18th centuries". This work is the result of years of academic study and research by A.N. Kurat. Despite the fact that the book had been published in Turkey in 2002 this Russian edition will be of great help in the studies of modern Russian historians since the book is written with the use of a large number of Eastern and Western sources inaccessible to Russian researchers. The book covers a great period of history since the ancient one where the author tried to reconstruct the history of the Turks before the times of formation and functioning of the post-Horde Tatar khanates. The book consists of 14 chapters and appendixes containing not only the well-known travel notes by Ibn Fadlan, excerpts from Ru...

Research materials: Historiographical sources, Russian chronicles, historical writings, diplomatic documents, etc. Research results and novelty: According to many researchers, political conflicts in the Kazan Khanate were caused by the struggle between the pro-Moscow and Eastern parties. One group of Kazan inhabitants focused on trade and economic ties with the Russian lands, and the other – with the Muslim world. The conflict of economic interests allegedly led to deep political contradictions, which served as a basis of the formation of the parties. However, as a result of this study, it was found that the semantics of the contents in the chronicles is not consistent with the concept of “party division”. The lengthy chronicle passages accompanying the descriptions of the events in the Moscow-Kazan relations were designed to show the negative qualities of the Kazan...

Research materials: Chronicles and tales, Razriad books, diplomatic documents, act materials, foreign works about Muscovy, materials from the correspondence of Ivan IV with A.M. Kurbsky, etc. Results and novelty of the research: The author identified allegorical elements in the description of Ivan IV’s behavior during the assault on Kazan on October 2, 1552 by comparing this description with similar reports about the Stand on the Ugra in 1480 and the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. Importantly, the reliability of the reports of official sources about Ivan IV’s postponement of his riding out to join the troops is confirmed by the account of A.M. Kurbsky, who explained the motives of the tsar’s action in a different way. The memories of A.M. Kurbsky, indicating the manifestation of pathological fear behind the actions of Ivan IV, are confirmed by the analysis of the tsar’s be...

The author cites the examples of the sources’ misunderstanding. Researchers treated literally reports about the Kazan khanate foundation, which in fact were based on the reminiscences from biblical books and needed an allegorical interpretation. Scholars made similar mistakes in their interpretation of some of the reports about the Kazan campaign in 1467, 1487, 1506, and 1552. In turn, the use of hermeneutic methods allows us to significantly supplement and even revise the picture of the Moscow-Kazan relations presented in the historians’ works. This paper demonstrates some features of the evolution of Russian chronicle writing that affected the nature of the representation of interstate relations. Period of the last third of the 15th cen-tury is described both by official and independent (provincial) chronicle vaults. In this, these sources describe the events in different ways. Official chronicles represented the Moscow-Kazan war of 1467–1469 as a religious confrontation ended with Russian victory, while independent sources described this war without religious connotations and pointed to the defeat of Moscow forces. The author also revealed significant differences in the description of the events in 1478 and 1487. In such a way, independent sources refute a number of official reports about the Moscow-Kazan relations in the last third of the 15th century. In turn, period of the first half of the 16th century is well documented only in the official chronicles since independent chronicles fell into decline during the strengthening of the united Russian State. Thus, the picture of the Moscow-Kazan relations of this period is unilateral since it is based on information of official chronicles, which, in many cases, can not be verified by alternative sources.

The author analyzes the messages of official Moscow and provincial chronicles. It is concluded that the description of Sviatoslav over the centuries has become widespread in Russian chronicles. At the same time it is uncharacteristic of the Christian literary tradition of epic stories. In this text, identified elements of the Turkic epic. Military life Svyatoslav and his men very similar to the way of life of the nomadic peoples of Eurasia. However, there is a certain literary borrowing in the description of food Svyatoslav. Along with ethnographic and epic fragments in the chronicle description of Prince Svyatoslav there exist paraphrases of the Bible. So chroniclers attempted to show that from the beginning of its history, East Slavic tribes followed the way an imminent adoption of the Orthodox faith. Description Svyatoslav not changed significantly during the XI-XVI centuries. Prince was perceived as a legendary leader and hero, who has spearheaded the ancient Russian state. Influence of Turkic epic once again demonstrates the importance of the military-political and socio-cultural role of nomadic peoples in the development of the Old Rus state and society.
