20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más, de Flavio Herrera Hernández. Reseña y comentarios 2da. edición
El escritor guatemalteco (novelista, poeta y académico) Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895-1968) publicó entre su variada producción literaria la que llamó una nivola: 20 Rábulas en Flux (1946), a la que después agregó un capítulo, por lo que a partir de 1965 quedó con el título definitivo de 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más. Para conmemorar el centenario de su nacimiento este se incluyó en la colección de cinco tomos de su obra casi completa, y en 2018, en el cincuentenario de su fallecimiento, fue publicada por cuarta vez. 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más constituye una colección de relatos hilvanados por el autor con base en sus recuerdos de treinta años atrás, de cuando estudió en las aulas universitarias la carrera de derecho durante el período comprendido de 1912 hasta el 25 de diciembre de 1917 inclusive. Por tratarse de «historias» vividas por un grupo de muchachos, la mayoría cursantes de la carrera y dos más de medicina que se unían al grupo solidariamente para disfrutar del clásico jolgorio juvenil, resulta amena la lectura, sobre todo porque Herrera las escribe y califica como parte de un «Ensayo de picaresca», en el cual el lector encontrará que él comenta, sin disimulo, anécdotas de la vida académica, de la situación del país en tiempos del dictador de los veintidós años, de las travesuras que les hacían a sus catedráticos: los reverenciaban, pero aun así varios fueron objeto de sus bromas, ya que como rábulas o güizaches no podían dejar santo parado. De igual forma, y a riesgo de que algún mojigato se asustara por lo que cuenta, Herrera describe las juergas que tenían lugar en viviendas de estudiantes, pensiones y, especialmente, en burdeles de mala muerte, sin dejar de mencionar los amores platónicos y otras veces reales de contados rábulas, quienes frecuentaban a las niñas bien, mucho mejor si eran de familia pudiente, pero que a la vez visitaban lenocinios regentados por meretrices que se encargaban de proveerles de quienes se «ocuparan» de ellos. El afán es ofrecer un sencillo homenaje a la vida y obra literaria de tan insigne autor, razón por la cual lo invita a leer 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más, de Flavio Herrera Hernández. La actividad se realizó en virtud que el 9 de junio se conmemoró el “Día de Miguel Ángel Asturias” en Guatemala, fecha declarada así porque el 9 de junio de 1974 falleció en un hospital de Madrid, España.
En virtud que la entrevista fue en vivo y por teléfono, no hay edición digital en el sitio o portal de la Radio. Me permito adjuntar copia de las respuestas, toda vez que la lista de preguntas me fue enviada un día antes y dio tiempo a esbozar una posible explicación a las interrogantes. Por supuesto que hubo preguntas por parte del público, pero las respuestas fueron sobre la marcha y no hice apuntes. Dado lo escaso del tiempo en la radio, varias de las preguntas ya no fueron requeridas al suscrito y por ende los oyentes no se enteraron. Empero, el documento guía que se acompaña las recoge.

Con el doctor William Felker el que esto escribe sostuvo comunicación vía correo electrónico en varias oportunidades. Habiéndola iniciado el 22 de julio de 2020, cuando se le requirió copia de su tesis de doctorado “El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera” (1973), y tras dos mensajes adicionales remitidos entre agosto y octubre de dicho año, felizmente se recibió la primera respuesta el 8 de enero de 2021, y la segunda en fecha 14 del mismo mes en la que el citado autor indica:
«Ahora que he leído sus trabajos sobre Flavio Herrera, estoy impresionado y profundamente agradecido de que mi disertación haya sido útil en su investigación. Las traducciones excelentes que usted ha hecho capturan mi intención por completo, y me siento honrado que usted considere que mi trabajo puede ser útil en el campo más amplio de la investigación guatemalteca. Me retiré de la universidad en 1998, y desde entonces he sido periodista y escritor [sobre asuntos] de la naturaleza. Di algunos artículos académicos en los años 80, pero no me he mantenido al día con mi investigación. No he pensado en mi tesis en décadas y la había considerado básicamente perdida. Usted puede comprender lo feliz y agradecido que estoy de que la encuentre valiosa. Tener su afirmación en este momento de mi vida es un gran regalo. Por supuesto, usted tiene mi permiso para utilizar parte o la totalidad de mi trabajo para traducción o comentario. Tengo una copia de mi tesis que le enviaré por correo si me envía su dirección postal. Puedo incluir copias de mis documentos que se enumeran a continuación, si los encuentra de interés. Lamento que mi trabajo no estuviera disponible para usted cuando comenzó sus investigaciones.

Nota bene: La TRADUCCIÓN DEL INGLÉS AL ESPAÑOL concluyó el 31 de diciembre de 2020. Razones de carácter técnico impidieron que fuera colocada en la Internet. La edición que el lector tiene ahora en sus manos, en forma virtual, al 7 de junio de 2021 no sufrió cambio alguno, excepto en algunos datos biográficos del autor, quien gentilmente solicitó su corrección el 15 de enero. Los tres estudios del doctor Felker, suscritos entre 1978 y 1989, serán traducidos en su oportunidad y colocados también en la Red, para aprovechamiento del público. Se confía en que pueda ser útil para académicos o cualquier persona que desee conocer el punto de vista del investigador norteamericano, sobre la vida y obra literaria del escritor guatemalteco Flavio Herrera Hernández. La publicación se realiza en conmemoración del 48 aniversario de fundación de la Casa de la Cultura Flavio Herrera, creada el 26 de junio de 1973 y declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación el 8 de octubre de 2020, y en razón a que entre finales de mayo y principios de junio de 1972 el doctor William Felker estuvo en dicha casa para efectuar su investigación de campo, cuando todavía estaba en desorden el legado bibliográfico y los bienes muebles que Herrera legara a la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, cuyo resultado dio a conocer en junio de 1973 en la Universidad de Tennessee, en cumplimiento de los requisitos para obtener el grado de Doctor en Filosofía. Finalmente, se agradece al citado doctor la autorización otorgada para realizar y publicar la traducción de su valioso estudio, efectuada únicamente con fines académicos, no lucrativos o comerciales.

El escritor guatemalteco Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895–1968) publicó el cuento “El miedo” en 192... more El escritor guatemalteco Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895–1968) publicó el cuento “El miedo” en 1923 (como parte de los diez que integran el libro Cenizas). Entre 1953 y 1954 lo amplió en su contenido, estableciendo un final distinto al que sugiere el texto original, convirtiéndolo en la novela Hembra, la cual permaneció inédita hasta su muerte y fue editada por primera y única vez en 1994.
En 1972 el mecanuscrito de la novela fue descubierto por el investigador norteamericano William L. Felker, cuando preparaba su tesis de doctorado, quien la incluyó como Apéndice de su trabajo académico que lleva por título El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera / El Señor de Bulbuxyá: Estudio de la vida y obra de Flavio Herrera.
El ensayo que ahora se presenta expone la génesis de Hembra, basada en el cuento “El miedo”: FLAVIO HERRERA. CUANDO “EL MIEDO” SE CONVIERTE EN HEMBRA. No tiene ninguna connotación erótica, peyorativa o de otra índole; describe básicamente el proceso de conversión del cuento a novela, y presenta la glosa de cada texto.

Habiéndola iniciado el 22 de julio de 2020, cuando se le requirió copia de su tesis de doctorado “El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera” (1973), y tras dos mensajes adicionales remitidos entre agosto y octubre de dicho año, felizmente se recibió la primera respuesta el 8 de enero de 2021, y la segunda en fecha 14 del mismo mes en la que el citado autor indica:
«Ahora que he leído sus trabajos sobre Flavio Herrera, estoy impresionado y profundamente agradecido de que mi disertación haya sido útil en su investigación. Las traducciones excelentes que usted ha hecho capturan mi intención por completo, y me siento honrado que usted considere que mi trabajo puede ser útil en el campo más amplio de la investigación guatemalteca. Me retiré de la universidad en 1998, y desde entonces he sido periodista y escritor [sobre asuntos] de la naturaleza. Di algunos artículos académicos en los años 80, pero no me he mantenido al día con mi investigación. No he pensado en mi tesis en décadas y la había considerado básicamente perdida. Usted puede comprender lo feliz y agradecido que estoy de que la encuentre valiosa. Tener su afirmación en este momento de mi vida es un gran regalo. Por supuesto, usted tiene mi permiso para utilizar parte o la totalidad de mi trabajo para traducción o comentario. El escritor guatemalteco Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895–1968) publicó el cuento “El miedo” en 192... more El escritor guatemalteco Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895–1968) publicó el cuento “El miedo” en 1923 (como parte de los diez que integran el libro Cenizas). Entre 1953 y 1954 lo amplió en su contenido, estableciendo un final distinto al que sugiere el texto original, convirtiéndolo en la novela Hembra, la cual permaneció inédita hasta su muerte y fue editada por primera y única vez en 1994.
En 1972 el mecanuscrito de la novela fue descubierto por el investigador norteamericano William L. Felker, cuando preparaba su tesis de doctorado, quien la incluyó como Apéndice de su trabajo académico que lleva por título El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera / El Señor de Bulbuxyá: Estudio de la vida y obra de Flavio Herrera.
El ensayo que ahora se presenta expone la génesis de Hembra, basada en el cuento “El miedo”: FLAVIO HERRERA. CUANDO “EL MIEDO” SE CONVIERTE EN HEMBRA. 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más, de Flavio Herrera Hernández. Reseña y comentarios 2da. edición
El escritor guatemalteco (novelista, poeta y académico) Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895-1968) publicó entre su variada producción literaria la que llamó una nivola: 20 Rábulas en Flux (1946), a la que después agregó un capítulo, por lo que a partir de 1965 quedó con el título definitivo de 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más. Para conmemorar el centenario de su nacimiento este se incluyó en la colección de cinco tomos de su obra casi completa, y en 2018, en el cincuentenario de su fallecimiento, fue publicada por cuarta vez.
20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más constituye una colección de relatos hilvanados por el autor con base en sus recuerdos de treinta años atrás, de cuando estudió en las aulas universitarias la carrera de derecho durante el período comprendido de 1912 hasta el 25 de diciembre de 1917 inclusive. Por tratarse de «historias» vividas por un grupo de muchachos, la mayoría cursantes de la carrera y dos más de medicina que se unían al grupo solidariamente para disfrutar del clásico jolgorio juvenil, resulta amena la lectura, sobre todo porque Herrera las escribe y califica como parte de un «Ensayo de picaresca», en el cual el lector encontrará que él comenta, sin disimulo, anécdotas de la vida académica, de la situación del país en tiempos del dictador de los veintidós años, de las travesuras que les hacían a sus catedráticos: los reverenciaban, pero aun así varios fueron objeto de sus bromas, ya que como rábulas o güizaches no podían dejar santo parado.
De igual forma, y a riesgo de que algún mojigato se asustara por lo que cuenta, Herrera describe las juergas que tenían lugar en viviendas de estudiantes, pensiones y, especialmente, en burdeles de mala muerte, sin dejar de mencionar los amores platónicos y otras veces reales de contados rábulas, quienes frecuentaban a las niñas bien, mucho mejor si eran de familia pudiente, pero que a la vez visitaban lenocinios regentados por meretrices que se encargaban de proveerles de quienes se «ocuparan» de ellos.
El afán es ofrecer un sencillo homenaje a la vida y obra literaria de tan insigne autor, razón por la cual lo invita a leer 20 Rábulas en Flux y uno más, de Flavio Herrera Hernández. Reseña y comentarios.

Me permito adjuntar copia de las respuestas, toda vez que la lista de preguntas me fue enviada un día antes y dio tiempo a esbozar una posible explicación a las interrogantes.
Por supuesto que hubo preguntas por parte del público, pero las respuestas fueron sobre la marcha y no hice apuntes. La publicación se realiza en conmemoración del 48 aniversario de fundación de la Casa de la Cultura Flavio Herrera, creada el 26 de junio de 1973 y declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación el 8 de octubre de 2020, y en razón a que entre finales de mayo y principios de junio de 1972 el doctor William Felker estuvo en dicha casa para efectuar su investigación de campo, cuando todavía estaba en desorden el legado bibliográfico y los bienes muebles que Herrera legara a la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, cuyo resultado dio a conocer en junio de 1973 en la Universidad de Tennessee, en cumplimiento de los requisitos para obtener el grado de Doctor en Filosofía.
Finalmente, se agradece al citado doctor la autorización otorgada para realizar y publicar la traducción de su valioso estudio, efectuada únicamente con fines académicos, no lucrativos o comerciales.

Corresponde al texto íntegro de la “Conferencia pronunciada en la clausura del Año lectivo de 1933 en la Universidad Nacional”, por el escritor Flavio Herrera Hernández (1895-1968), en acto efectuado el domingo 4 de marzo de 1934.
Publicado originalmente con el título: “El milagro hispanoamericano”. Guatemala : "El Imparcial", martes 6 de marzo de 1934 (páginas 5 y 6), y en versión definitiva por Tipografía Nacional, abril de 1934. Pp. 20.
Se trata de un excelente resumen de su tesis de doctorado "El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera" (1973) / "El Señor de Bulbuxyá: Estudio de la vida y obra de Flavio Herrera".
Ahora se ofrece la transcripción textual en versión inglés-español, con algunas notas aclaratorias.
En 1972 el mecanuscrito de la novela fue descubierto por el investigador norteamericano William L. Felker, cuando preparaba su tesis de doctorado, quien la incluyó como Apéndice de su trabajo académico que lleva por título El Señor de Bulbuxyá: A study of the life and Works of Flavio Herrera / El Señor de Bulbuxyá: Estudio de la vida y obra de Flavio Herrera.
El ensayo que ahora se presenta expone la génesis de Hembra, basada en el cuento “El miedo”: FLAVIO HERRERA. CUANDO “EL MIEDO” SE CONVIERTE EN HEMBRA. No tiene ninguna connotación erótica, peyorativa o de otra índole; describe básicamente el proceso de conversión del cuento a novela, y presenta la glosa de cada texto.
