Voluntary participation before 1971 was such that approximately 90% of the DHIA-tested cows were also mastitis tested with the California Mastitis Test (CMT). In 1961 an average of 11,206 cows were CMT-tested per month. Ten years later in 1971, an average of 22,687 cows were tested per month including approximately 10 per cent which previously had not been on the CMT but had been DHIA testing. This two-fold increase follows a similar increase in total DHIA cows (table 1).

Application of acaricides to livestock and dogs at 14-day intervals for an 18-month period eliminated foci of tick infestation on 188 farms in four different locations without additional aerial or ground treatment. Reasons for the success and some of the costs associated with the eradication program on Puerto Rico are presented.

Broiler trade between the United States and Mexico has been restricted to shipments mainly emanating from the United States, with the United States shipping mostly dark meat to Mexico. This study examines sanitary requirements and regulations currently governing U.S.-Mexico broiler trade. Sensitivity analysis, using a cost-minimization mathematical programming model, detects minimal economic impact on the U.S. broiler market if Mexico is allowed to ship fresh, chilled, and frozen poultry to the United States.
