For this article, the Greek colony of Paestum in Magna Graecia was chosen to be examined for many reasons. Archaeologically, Paestum is the perfect example of how longstanding assumptions can be challenged through modern interpretation and research methods. Excavated and well known since the 18th century, it was long assumed largely through the basis of small pieces of ancient literature that the Lucanians largely displaced the Greek population living there. However, archaeological evidence seems to point to the contrary, and new analysis on the tomb paintings and material culture excavated at Paestum seems to point to a more fluid reality of those who spent their lives there. Archaeological excavation often brings nuance and challenges to the historical narrative, and Poseidonia-Paestum is an example that we can look to.

This paper primarily looks at the connection between the reputation of Classical Archaeology as being antiquated and outdated with current trends and theoretical publications. Is the theoretical framework within Classical Archaeology still considered outdated? Or are new questions being answered?

Krete is a highly active and dynamic geological area which has been subject to some major changes in the landscape within the last few hundred thousand years alone. These changes have undoubtedly affected archaeological sites to a great extent.

It looks briefly at the conservation status of the two sites, but also comparison between the archaeological methods used.
