Over 50 sites worldwide - universities, research institutions and companies - have already adopted SAGE to drive their ultra-resolution displays.

These changes are motivating a fundamentally new approach to the design and provisioning of services, facilities, and infrastructure. Traditionally, such resources have been designed and implemented as centralized fixed utility services, with almost no options for specialization and customization, especially by processes at the

The OptIPuter project (www.optiputer.net) uses medical and earth sciences imaging as application drivers. Quartzite (UCSD) and Starlight (Chicago) create unique combinations of OEO routers and OOO and wavelength-selective optical switches.

Observing that the exponential growth rates in bandwidth and storage are now much higher than Moore's Law, this major new project of several universities - currently six in the US and one in Amsterdam - exploits a new world of computing in which the central architectural element is optical networking. This transition is caused by the use of parallelism, as in supercomputing a decade ago. However, this time the parallelism is in multiple wavelengths of light, or lambdas, on single optical fibers, creating a LambdaGrid. Providing applications-centric middleware to control the LambdaGrid on a regional and global scale is a key goal of the OptIPuter and StarLight Optical Switching projects. The computer provides real-time data in shared, collaborative environments, which enables computational science and engineering researchers to interact with each other as well as their computational models, over distance.

This paper discusses the design and implementation of a machine-independent data structure for Labanotation and its application in an interactive storage, retrieval and editing system.
