Ten patients with SELs caused by neurocysticercosis (n=6) or tuberculosis (n=4) were examined by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Tuberculomas had a high peak of lipids, more choline, and less N-acetylaspartate and creatine. The choline/creatine ratio was greater than 1 in all tuberculomas but in none of the cysticerci. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy differentiates SELs caused by cysticercosis or tuberculosis and may avoid brain biopsies or unnecessary antituberculosis treatments.

Interview data were obtained from 25 individuals with hymenolepiasis only and 46 matched controls. Individuals with other intestinal helminths or giardiasis were excluded. Twenty nitazoxanide-treated cases were followed with stool examination a month later. There were no significant differences between groups in the prevalence of symptoms except headache, which was less frequent in the cases. Treatment efficacy was 75%. Hymenolepiasis in this community did not have significant impact on specific symptoms.

Thirteen (52%) showed one or more muscle calcifications. The numbers of calcifications in the thighs and the brain were not correlated. Patients with a positive CT scan for muscle calcifications were also examined by X-rays to compare both methods. Only 6 of 13 had visible calcifications on X-ray. Thigh CT scans can demonstrate muscle calcifications in a significant proportion of patients with calcified neurocysticercosis.
