Asset managers are focusing their attention on the search for new asset classes by taking advantage of the new opportunities to capture risk premia with the aim of exceeding the returns given by traditional investments, including traded equities, fixed income securities, and cash. By doing so, they are trying to improve the selection of alternative assets, such as commodities that sometimes have relatively low correlations with traditional assets. The chapter begins by describing the principles of asset allocation, distinguishing between passive and active asset allocation, also focusing on beta and alternative beta. It then concentrates on how investors can gain exposure to commodities through different investment vehicles and strategies.

In particular, we analyze three ESG scores: MSCI ESG Rating, Sustainalytics scores and S&P DJI/Robeco ESG Scores, by examining the European stock market in two periods: medium/long term (five years) and short-term (one year). First of all, we associate each component of the index in relation to its MSCI ESG Rating, Sustainalytics score and S&P DJI/Robeco ESG Scores. We build two portfolios: • First quartile portfolio 1Q (according to MSCI; Sustainalytics; and S&P DJI/Robeco ESG Scores), including securities of companies with the highest ESG score, based on ESG best-in-class screening strategy. • Fourth quartile portfolio 4Q (according to MSCI; Sustainalytics; and S&P DJI/Robeco ESG Scores), including securities of companies with the lowest ESG scores. We aim to answer the following questions: a) do portfolios with higher ESG score...

In the last five years, as a result of the effects of speculative bubble and the growth of interest rate, the attention of the managers of the portfolio has shifted to alternative assets, like hedge funds, private equity, credit derivatives and commodities, to earn extra returns. The commodities, traded on spot and forward markets, are characterized by the presence of negative correlation with traditional asset classes. Therefore, they facilitate to obtain a good ‘alpha’, which expresses the non-systematic risk. The commodities have shown good performance in the last two years, especially the important commodities indices. Reuters/Jeffries-CRB (Commodities Research Bureau) index and Standard and Poor’s Commodity Index (S&P GSCI) have earned returns over 15%. This paper examines the relationship between the portfolio returns in the presence of commodities and traditional asset classes (stocks, bonds and liquidity).
