This report aims to provide an updated analysis of labor market trends for the health workforce i... more This report aims to provide an updated analysis of labor market trends for the health workforce in Peru, focusing on the basic health team, physician, nurse, and midwife, and other health professionals related to current priorities. Peru has been labeled as a country with a shortage of health professionals (that is, with less than 25 professionals per 10,000 inhabitants), and although the most recent numbers indicate that the situation has improved, the shortages are bound to become more acute as the country aims to achieve Universal Health Coverage. The authors found that the country trains both in public and private universities a large number of professionals, but that the majority of trained professionals do not then go on to work for the public sector. This dynamic had not been described before and challenges current assumptions of human resources needs and availability. We performed a cross sectional study in Lari (3600 m), a highland rural community from Arequipa, ... more We performed a cross sectional study in Lari (3600 m), a highland rural community from Arequipa, Peru. We evaluated a body mass index (BMI), glycemia and lipid profile in 74 over 18 year persons. The mean age was 51.7 ± 18.0 years, 62.2% were women, mean of BMI was 25.6 ± 3.7. Prevalence of hypercholesterolemia was 40.6%, "low HDL" in 77% of the population (93.5% in women vs 50% in men, p <0.001) and elevated level of LDL was 71.7%. The prevalence of impaired fasting glycemia was 27%. In conclusion, we found high prevalence of impaired fasting glycemia, hypercholesterolemia and especially "low HDL" in high altitude rural natives. These findings must be considered to realize interventions in high altitude populations to avoid future cardiovascular complications.

Study the profiles of the physicians, nurses and midwives that these programs train and their competencies to work at the primary health care level. Cross-sectional study using data on the volume of applicants, students and graduates of these eight professional training programs during the period 2007 - 2011. In addition, the curricula of professional training programs for physicians, nurses and midwives from public and private universities were analyzed, along with competency profiles developed by Professional Colleges and the Ministry of Health. Admission rates in public and private universities vary by program: 4% and 28% respectively for medical schools, and 18% and 90% for nursing.
