of honest, conscious, ecumenic, spiritual human beings, who enriched by the
advancement of human knowledge in most fields, on top of scientific,
technological, artistic and cultural developments, so they do not mix up means with
the unique end: a comprehensive and increasing level of a healthy, peaceful,
useful and joyful living; human beings who enjoy harmoniously both spiritual and
material well-being, who are capable of achieving noble purposes, through free
and trustworthy efforts, without lessening anyone´s dignity. Only under these
congruent scenarios we may have better families, better institutions, better
societies.

La oposición de José Martí a la anexión de Cuba a los Estados Unidos nació de su profundo conocim... more La oposición de José Martí a la anexión de Cuba a los Estados Unidos nació de su profundo conocimiento de las realidades que anidaban en lo profundo de la sociedad norteamericana: el amor excesivo al dinero, el empleo de cualquier método para obtenerlo, sobre todo la fuerza; la aplicación sistemática de la filosofía del despojo, tanto hacia los naturales del país como hacia los países vecinos.
Su antimperialismo, sin embargo, no fue antinorteamericanismo. Aplaudió y proclamó las virtudes a aquella gran nación, y señaló los vicios que comenzaban a podrir sus cimientos y de los cuales debían salvarse las jóvenes repúblicas hispanoamericanas, en primer lugar Cuba y Puerto Rico, las dos últimas posesiones coloniales españolas en América, a cuya independencia se había opuesto disimulada, primero, y abiertamente, después, la élite de poder norteamericana.
Estos temores de José Martí se verían confirmados cuando en 1898, a escasos dos años de su muerte en combate frente a España, los Estados Unidos intervinieron en la guerra que ya tenían ganada los patriotas cubanos. El resultado es de todos conocido: la apropiación de Puerto Rico y Filipinas, y el estatus neocolonial al que fue sometida Cuba desde el 20 de mayo de 1902.

Los registros migratorios de las autoridades dominicanas anotaban dos nombres entre los pasajeros que ese día arribaron a la hospitalaria ciudad norteña: Marcos y Antonio Maceo Grajales, nietos de dominicanos, nacidos en Santiago de Cuba. Antonio aún traía flotando sobre sus sienes los destellos de gloria que lo cubrirían desde que, dos años antes, se había opuesto a la humillante firma de una paz sin independencia, y reivindicó en la Protesta de Baraguá la vergüenza de los patriotas que habían caído en la década heroica. Exiliado en Jamaica desde el término de la contienda cubana, aquel mulato altivo de seis pies, siete pulgadas y doscientas cincuenta libras de puro músculo, a quien ya comenzaban a llamar el Titán de Bronce por las más de veinte cicatrices de guerra que mostraba en su sólida estructura, desandaba los caminos antillanos en busca de recursos para reavivar las llamas de la guerra por la independencia de Cuba y Puerto Rico. Había pasado a Haití con la creencia de que, siendo aquella república nacida de la rebelión general de una raza infeliz contra sus criminales dominadores y siendo él representante demostradamente digno de esa misma raza, habría de encontrar en el gobierno del presidente Salomón apoyo y comprensión para su noble causa. Acaso tenía en mente, conocedor y amante de la hermosa historia de nuestra América, el apoyo que Petión había brindado al Libertador Bolívar en su afán de construir, en el golosamente nombrado Nuevo Mundo, un verdadero Mundo Nuevo. Sin embargo, en lugar de apoyo encontró en el gobierno haitiano reticencia, espionaje y contubernio con los representantes españoles para asesinarlo. Dos dominicanos se prestaron también para participar en aquella afrentosa intentona. Pero fueron más los que le cuidaron, admiraron y pusieron sobre aviso que, gracias a ellos, salvó milagrosamente la vida al caer en una alevosa emboscada en plena noche, mientras trataba de dejar aquel país y encaminarse a las siempre hospitalarias tierras dominicanas, donde nacieron sus ancestros. Se va a Saint Thomas tratando de burlar el férreo espionaje que lo sigue día y noche. Desde allí escribe cartas y prepara la nueva ruta hacia Santo Domingo. Aunque amaga con irse a México, en nota falsa para despistar a sus perseguidores, todos saben que su brújula marca un único destino posible: Puerto Plata, la ciudad de vocación antillanista donde habita y gobierna, por ley de la República y por su autoridad moral incontrastable, el Centauro Mayor de las Antillas: Gregorio Luperón. Venciendo peligrosísimas conspiraciones embarca desde Saint Thomas, junto a su hermano Marcos, hacia Turks Islands. Desde allí sale hacia Puerto Plata adonde dos días antes ha llegado, avisado y listo para tramar los oscuros sucesos que acontecerán en los días siguientes, el Vicecónsul de España, Augusto Bermúdez. Amigos puertoplateños le habían escrito para que evitara cruzar el Paso de la Mona, pues es conocido que allí le esperará la muerte. Le piden que busque otra ruta, aunque le sea más cara en dineros. Debe entrar de incógnito, gracias a los entendimientos a que se había llegado con el capitán del puerto, Félix Tavarez, cuñado de Luperón. Por eso embarca en el vapor de bandera inglesa en el que finalmente llega. Recibido con amplio regocijo por dominicanos, cubanos y puertorriqueños, se hospeda en la casa de uno de los más distinguidos hombres de la guerra de Cuba, Fernando Figueredo, a cuya pluma límpida y sincera debemos la relación tremenda de aquella década fundacional en su libro Desde Yara hasta el Zanjón.
