The industry is currently facing various technical and regulatory challenges. Performance monitoring, vessel optimisation, reduction of emissions and maintenance have become high priorities for ship operators. The marine industry is also moving towards autonomous operation to reduce human error. The rate of sensor technology implementation has increased and also raised new technological challenges. The analysis of sensor data creates new challenges to achieve operational excellence. This paper presents the implementation of statistical analysis on ship data and develops a system to automatically detect the vessel operational modes based on sensor data.

There have not been as many efforts to apply powerful quality improvement techniques such as DoE to improve non-manufacturing processes. Factor levels often involve changing the way people work and so have to be handled carefully. It is even more important to get everyone working as a team. This paper explores the benefits and challenges in the application of DoE in non-manufacturing contexts. The viewpoints regarding the benefits and challenges of DoE in the non-manufacturing arena are gathered from a number of leading academics and practitioners in the field. The paper also makes an attempt to demystify the fact that DoE is not just applicable to manufacturing industries; rather it is equally applicable to non-manufacturing processes within manufacturing compa...

We compared the long-term outcomes of TVT as a standalone operation (Group 1) with those in TVT in combination with pelvic floor reconstruction (Group 2) during a 5-year follow-up. Subjective cure was similar at 2 years (84.8% Group 1; 78.1% Group 2) and 5 years (80.9% Group 1; 92.8% Group 2). There were no differences in objective cure in both groups at 2 years on cystometry (87.3% Group 1; 85.7% Group 2) and 5 years using a 1-hour pad test (98.3% Group 1; 93.1% Group 2). Similar results were seen for overall satisfaction at 2 years (95.4% Group 1; 84.3% Group 2) and 5 years (93.6% Group 1; 100% Group 2). QoL improvement was reported by 95.4% (Group 1) and 96.8% (Group 2) women at 2 years and by 96.8% (Group 1) and 100% (Group 2) at 5 years. Overall, there were no significant differences in long-term outcomes in both groups.

It aims to correct misconceptions and erroneous statements about the standard appearing in the paper by Antony et al. (2021) and to demonstrate the usefulness of the standard in a wide range of application sectors.Design/methodology/approachA review of recently reported misconceptions and erroneous statements is presented and clarifications are provided. A qualitative interview approach was utilised to obtain the views of leading academics and practitioners familiar with Six Sigma and Lean in a range of sectors and from different parts of the world. This includes the results of a survey for capturing expectations and requirements for the next ISO18404 version.FindingsClarifications were needed to correct some misconceptions and erroneous statements in recently published work. However, on review, the reports of the interviews in Antony et al. (2021) indicate that most Lean Six Sigma prof...

ETP pilot schemes were implemented by three consortia during 2002 and 2003, with a view to deciding which elements of the schemes were the most effective. Data for statistical analysis were collected after a 6 month trial period. During this time, the ETP pilots were subject to early teething problems and there were certain concerns not least of which was the increased requirement for competence in computing skills. However, after the trial period, there was a generally positive attitude toward ETP.Norsk: Elektronisk overføring av resepter er en viktig del av britiske myndigheters planer for modernisering av helsevesenet. Pilotforsøk har blitt gjennomført i 2002 og 2003, for å teste ut egenskaper med oppleggene. Data ble samlet inn etter en seks måneders prøveperiode. Systemet hadde barnesyk-dommer, og kravet...

Typically, the query is: I have many sensors and many measurements, what shall I do with all this data, and how can I get ready for Industry 4.0? The so-called fourth industrial revolution refers to automation and control based on data exchange in a digital environment where measurements are available on all aspects of production. Data science plays an intrinsic role in this scenario and is focused on understanding and using data. Data science requires a challenging mix of capability in data analytics and information technology, and business know-how. Statisticians need to work with computer scientists; data analytics includes machine learning and statistical analysis and these extract meaning from data in different ways. Moving towards increased use of data requires buy in from higher management and board members. Although serious progress invo...

Although well used by policy makers, planners and academic researchers, engagement with businesses is not fully developed. Both corporate and citizen users can benefit more from using these free resources. Considerable efforts are being made to engage with users, for example via the recently launched www.statsusernet.org.uk in the UK and the BLUE-ETS FP7 funded project (www.blue-ets.istat.it) in Europe. However, more can be done. Inaccurate completion of business surveys causes unnecessary expense. Motivation to complete can be improved by linking data collection with data usage. Case studies are an important mechanism for this. The UK Royal Statistical Society‟sgetstats campaign (www.getstats.org.uk) is 3 years into a 10 year programme to promote better understanding of statistics in media, politics, business and education. This will encourage greater use of statistics. Access is the first step, ...
