Over 90% of hard disks that were examined as a result of the two Independent studies were in an easily recoverable state with some drives simply requiring a boot. This paper will give an overview and comparison of the two studies conducted. Then an examination of possible factors responsible for the inadequate erasure of hard disk devices will be undertaken. Furthermore, possible future research directions will also be explored

The primary goal of this project is to create a software tool for use by non-technical law enforcement officers during the initial investigation and assessment of an electronic crime scene. This tool will be designed as an initial response tool, to quickly and easily find, view and export any relevant files stored on a computer, establishing if further expert investigation of that computer is warranted. When fully developed, the tool will allow investigators unprecedented real time, on site access to electronic evidence whilst maintaining complete forensic soundness.

Robustness tests were performed on a selection of the ten most popular firewalls by market share. The test system used was a vanilla installation of Windows XP with SP2 and all the most recent updates and patches.

The clients accessing the proxy server have a variety of connectivity from access across a 100Mb switched Ethernet connection on the departmental LAN down to remote computers using 28.8K modems for connectivity to the caching engine. The initial analysis uncovered 14 potential highly abusive users but one of these was later determined to be a peered caching server. This left 13 abusive users responsible for the consumption of almost 50% of the 121 Gigabytes served by the departmental proxy server over a period of 4 months. An extended analysis of the top 13 or bakers dozen of users is provided and uncovers several key issues and problems related to their usage. This includes access of MP3 and streaming video, on-line chat engines, pornographic materials, share trading and unintentional abusive uses of the proxy server.
