ABSTRACT
This project focuses on a small urban church plant’s efforts to empower young adults in church ministry through preaching and Bible study, create intergenerational community, and provide a paradigm for effective evangelism and discipleship. The project outlines a brief history of the East End congregation and includes the spiritual journey of the minister and the congregants. City demographics, goals, assumptions, limitations, and definitions are shared through an assessment of research related to young adults with special emphasis on young adult ministries. Case studies and information regarding practical programs of other churches are shared. Insights are explored from the Old and New Testaments. The Trinity is given as the divine example for a healthy community; there is emphasis placed on the paradigm provided through early Hebrew culture and generational traditions for educating children; and the topics of discipleship, mentoring, and followership are covered. Developmental steps taken at the East End congregation are discussed, including prayerful selection and planning, as well as case studies and an outline of a potential member assimilation manual. An evaluation of the East End congregation potential for young adult growth is provided, along with an outline of ten operative conclusions. The appendices include sermons preached in relation to the project, a cover letter inviting young adults to participate in a ministry project, an outline of a Bible study taught, and focus group questions and responses.

This theme is viewed on one end as a mystery and on another end as a hermeneutical presupposition. The concept of secrecy centers on the miracles of Jesus, his encounters with demons, and his instructions to the disciples. The passages that underscore this theme can be found in Mark 1:25, 34; Mark 1:44; 5:43; 8:27-30; 9:2-9. The passage under consideration for this paper is Mark 3:7-12. This paper will present an overview of scholarship, the background and purpose of Mark’s gospel, an outline of chapter 3 including the text under consideration, an exposition and exegesis of the text, and will conclude with possible reasons for the Messianic Secret.
