This paper identifies the determinants of buying and consumption patterns for rice in the CALABARZON region. The study utilized secondary data from a consumer survey among 496 rice consumers in the region. The socio-demographic profile and personal factors as well as their buying and consumption patterns of the respondents were examined using descriptive statistics. Pearson correlation and Spearman Rank correlation were used to determine associations among sociodemographic factors, personal factors, and buying pattern variables. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify the determinants of buying and consumption pattern variables. Majority of the respondents are female, married, mothers, and college graduates; and belong to income classes 1 and 2. The most important intrinsic factor for uncooked rice is aroma and for cooked rice, moistness. For ex...

Results are based on a survey of 145 hog raisers — 71 from the City of San Jose del Monte (CSJDM) and 74 from Santa Maria. The CSJDM enterprises have higher net income per head than the Santa Maria enterprises but the latter have slightly higher profit-to-sales ratio. By scale of operation, medium commercial enterprises are the most profitable in both areas and found to have sold their produce at the highest price. Across production systems, the farrow-to-breeder-finisher in CSJDM registers the highest proportion of profit to sales. This system sells multiple products and its breeder stocks are sold at higher prices. The boar-for-hire production system has the lowest profit-to-sales ratio, which is attributed to the increasing utilization of artificial insemination in CSJDM. In the case of the Santa Maria enterpris...

A comparison of the PECs of the two groups can generate insights which can serve as a source of valuable lessons for the design of the curricular revisions of UPLB's BS ABM program. Demographic information and responses to 55 PEC-related statements were gathered from students of different year levels in the two schools. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test and ordinal logistic analysis and marginal effect analysis. Results reveal that that, except for persistence and goal setting, the BSE students have significantly higher mean scores in all the PECs compared with the BS ABM students. The differences in PEC mean scores are more highly significant between the sophomores of the two schools. The...

Still, they do not have formal management training. This qualitative study examined the managerial competencies of 11 university firstline managers. Using Kurz and Bartram's Great Eight Competency Theory (2002) for the thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, most of the respondents exhibited all eight competencies. However, they differed in terms of manifestations. A typology of academic administrators was developed based on the eight competencies, namely: (1) delegator, (2) accommodator, (3) director, and (4) initiator. Further quantitative research is recommended to refine this typology. Likewise, to develop current and potential administrators, this paper recommends training and workshops on human resources management, communication, conflict resolution, relationship building and maintenance, resource management, mentoring, project and research management, situational anal...

The study was conducted to present the profile of the players in the lanzones industry, describe and assess the current performance of the industry, identify problems as well as investment opportunities and recommend possible solutions for the local lanzones industry. Data gathering involved conducting interviews via a survey of 172 lanzones farmers and 30 lanzones traders selected using stratified random sampling and secondary data collection. Results showed that lanzones farmers practice intercropping in view of the crop’s seasonality and better profitability. Challenges include the onslaught of typhoons, fluctuating temperature and pests and diseases. Prospects include the presence of hardy foreign varieties such as ‘duku’ or ‘longkong’ and macrosomatic cloning to boost production. Using new technologies, farmer participation in seminars, intercropping with rambutan and putting up a demo farm for mac...

Quantitative method following descriptive-correlational research design was employed. Out of 281 WHHs, 162 were randomly selected as the respondents of this study. Descriptive statistics, principal component analysis (PCA), t-test for independent samples, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Women-headed households in the two remote coastal communities have moderate to high vulnerability in terms of demographic, economic, and social factors. No significant difference was found in their level of social vulnerability; however, a substantial difference was found in the adaptive capacity of the respondents from the East and North coastal communities. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the number of household members with disabilities, affiliation with social gr...

The study aimed to analyze the household dietary diversity of beneficiary and non-beneficiary households of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in selected barangays in San Pablo City, Laguna, Philippines and determine the nutritional status of children (6-60 months old) within these households. Methods. Household dietary diversity score (HDDS) was used as an indicator for the households' dietary diversity. The nutritional status of children was determined using anthropometric data from the Barangay Health Centers. A total of 270 households was randomly selected through stratified random sampling with equal allocation. Results. Findings showed that beneficiary households had higher HDDS compared to the non-beneficiary households. The results also suggest that beneficiary households with larger household size, higher income, who were living in rural areas and who have female as well as more educated financial managers, tend to have a more diverse diet. Its goal was to develop human resource capacity for the Philippine agricultural and fisheries sectors. While there have been studies on the impact of foreign program–assisted scholarships, focusing on personal and professional impacts, we expanded the framework by looking at institutional impacts. This study surveyed 88 former scholars and conducted 4 focus group discussions and 4 key informant interviews with institutional administrators in order to describe the contributions of these scholars and document the impact of the FPASP on institutional capacity building for the Philippine agricultural sector. Results show that the FPASP scholars contributed to the enhancement of research, teaching, extension, regulatory, and management capacities in their respective institutions. However, ...

One fundamental issue though is what factors affect an individual‘s decision to engage in entrepreneurship. This study aims to determine the factors that affect an individual‘s decision to become an entrepreneur. One-hundred entrepreneurs and 100 non-entrepreneurs in Los Banos, Laguna were the respondents of the study. Probit regression was used to estimate the probability that an individual would become an entrepreneur with respect to some factors. The analysis reveals that six variables are significant: gender, family size, wealth, having entrepreneur- parents, years of schooling and risk tolerance. Women are found to be more inclined to engage in entrepreneurial activity. On the other hand, as the years of schooling of an individual increase, the probability of his or her engaging in entrepreneurship decreases. Meanwhile, family size has a direct relationship with th...

Our findings show that mean willingness to pay (WTP) bids are highest under positive information, followed by no information, negative information, and unexpectedly lowest with two-sided information. Participants might have put more weight on the negative when faced with both positive and negative information. There is also a minor difference in WTP with respect to the reference price between positive information and no information. Furthermore, the marginal effect on WTP of positive information vis-a-vis no information is minimal. This suggests that the positive information faced by consumers might not be compelling enough to drastically increase WTP bids for a genetically modified product such as golden rice.
