This contribution originates, from the development of projects that are formed based on the initiatives of the different business areas, which must be part of a Project Portfolio. Despite the importance of the IT Project Portfolio for the institution, it does not have a Project Portfolio Management process that is correctly formalized and promoted by Senior Management; resulting in the use of subjective criteria to filter, prioritize, select, execute and optimize projects, making it difficult to include those that generate the greatest benefits and achieve organizational objectives in an optimal way. For this reason, the institution has the need to adopt an IT Project Portfolio Management Model based on a series of good practices recognized in the industry. This re...

We recently found that CREB, a transcription factor proposed to regulate myostatin expression, is highly phosphorylated in some wasting conditions. Based on a novel Akt-PDE3/4 signaling paradigm, we hypothesized that reduced Akt signaling contributes to CREB activation and myostatin expression. C2C12 myotubes were incubated with dexamethasone (Dex), an atrophy-inducing synthetic glucocorticoid. Akt/CREB signaling and myostatin expression were evaluated by immunoblot and qPCR analyses. Inhibitors of Akt, phosphodiesterase (PDE)-3/4, and protein kinase A (PKA) signaling were used to test our hypothesis. Incubating myotubes with Dex for 3-24 h inhibited Akt phosphorylation and enhanced CREB phosphorylation as well as myostatin mRNA and protein. Inhibition of PI3K/Akt signaling w...

Epicardial adipose tissue surrounding the heart displays biochemical, thermogenic and cardioprotective properties. However, the metabolic crosstalk between epicardial fat and the myocardium is largely unknown. This study sought to understand epicardial adipose tissue metabolism from heart failure patients, with or without diabetes. We aimed to unravel possible differences in glucose and lipid metabolism between human epicardial and subcutaneous adipocytes and elucidate the potential underlying mechanisms involved in heart failure. Insulin-stimulated (14)C-glucose uptake and isoproterenol-stimulated lipolysis were measured in isolated epicardial and subcutaneous adipocytes. The expression of genes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism was analyzed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in adipocytes. In addition, epicardial and subcutaneous fatty ac...

The movements are captured with two webcams placed orthogonally inside of the physical trainer. On the image, the instruments were detected by using color markers placed on the distal tip of each instrument. The 3D position of the tip of the instrument within the work space was obtained by linear triangulation method. Preliminary results showed linearity and repeatability in the motion tracking with a resolution of 0.616 mm in each axis; the accuracy of the system showed a 3D instrument positioning error of 1.009 ± 0.101 mm. This tool is a portable and low-cost alternative to traditional tracking devices and a trustable method for the objective evaluation of the surgeon’s surgical skills.

A non-virtual system which consists of a canine gastrointestinal model is proposed. This prototype system design includes a mechanism that emulates a gastroscope and software which allows determining the anatomical location in which the endoscope is located and help to improve the skills in spatial location.

These skills can be measured objectively through hybrid and virtual training systems. Of which, the most advanced, integrates force feedback systems and augmented reality graphics. However, these systems are inaccessible because of their high cost, limiting the expected academic impact. In this article, we propose a computerized system for an objective evaluation, which can be integrated into any physical trainer at a low cost.

This property remained stable after over 1 year residence at sea level and was transmitted to the descendants born at sea level. Chicken were introduced in South America during the Spanish conquest and therefore their adaptation time to high altitude is less than 500 years. This finding shows that a genotypic change in hemoglobin function can occur in an extremely short evolutionary time and leads to some reflections on the high altitude adaptation of the mammals that migrated to South America during the great Plio-Pleistocene interchange.
