The current study sought to fill this gap by investigating whether the recycling of Objective move (study purposes/questions/hypotheses) in RA Discussion sections, which was previously used in the Introduction, is vulnerable to disciplinary differences. To achieve the study’s objective, 600 English RAs published between 2006 and 2018 in six Soft Science disciplines, with an equal number in each discipline were selected. The move model developed by Weissberg and Buker (1990) served as a road map for analyzing RAs. After identifying the Objective move in RA Introductions, the frequency of its recycling in RA Discussions was calculated and compared across disciplines. The data analysis revealed that disciplinary variations do not result in variations in the recycling of this move in the ...

To this end, a total of 62 English as a foreign language (EFL) male and female learner in a language institute in Iran participated in the study. The study took over a period of two months in a classroom setting. Participants were exposed to transformative instructional approach and their motivation was investigate following the relevant practices. This study adopted a mixed-methods approach to data collection as well as data analysis which offers a richer and deeper insight into the findings. To measure learners’ speaking development before and after the treatment, the Preliminary English Test was implemented. The findings verified the value of transformative teaching approach in enhancing the speaking skill. Also, the findings of this study suggest that instructional conditions particularly the transformative approach enhance learners’ self...

The current study sought to bridge this gap by exploring cross-disciplinary variations in the recycling of the Objective move (research questions/hypotheses/purposes) across four conventional sections (Introduction, Method, Result, and Discussion) of RAs. To this end, 600 English RAs from four prestigious journals in six soft science disciplines, published between 2006 and 2018, were selected. The quantitative data analysis results revealed that the Objective move’s recycling was sensitive to the disciplinary variations and RA sections. That is, Economics RAs were the main platforms for recycling the Objective move, and Psychology RAs witnessed the least amount of its recycling. Moreover, Objective move recycling was observed most frequently in the Discussion sections and ...

Following this assumption, a corpus of 32 research articles in the field of applied linguistics were analyzed in order to find out both the cross-sectional (i.e. Introduction-Methodology-Results- Discussion/Conclusion) variations in the use of metadiscourse – as a key tool for establishing interpersonal relationships in academic writing. Hyland's (2005) taxonomy of metadiscourse was applied to analyze the data set. The findings of the study revealed that the authors utilized interpersonal features differently in the four rhetorical atmospheres of their texts. Writers tended to employ high frequency of interactive metadiscourse resources in the introduction section of their articles, while in the...

To underpin this position and to reveal some of the ways this is achieved, this article analyzes a relatively wide spectrum of academic texts (20 research articles, 20 handbook chapters, 20 scholarly textbook chapters, and 20 intro-ductory textbook chapters) in applied linguistics. The authors show here the importance of establishing social relationships in academic arguments, suggest some of the ways this is achieved, and indicate how the social and institutional differences that underlie production and reception of different academic genres influence the ways metadiscourse is shaped in academic communication.
Since the early development of interest in the interpersonal dimensions of academic communication... more Since the early development of interest in the interpersonal dimensions of academic communication in the 1980s, the analytic potentials of the concept of metadiscourse have motivated a large number of investigations. Although these analytic potentials have facilitated the study of diverse academic genres, there has always been a risk of detachment of textual analyses form the contextual origins and motivations. In some cases, this detachment has been so observable that the true discoursal nature of the interpersonal dimensions of academic communication has been reduced to classifications of a large number of pure textual properties. As a reaction to this reductionist trend, the present article provides a preliminary framework within which the contextual origins of metadiscourse features can be understood. It is suggested that if the findings of metadiscourse research are meant to be interpreted in meaningful ways, they should be contextualized within such process-oriented frameworks.

To start with a relatively narrow focus, a corpus of thirty mathematics research articles were randomly selected from The Bulletin of the Iranian Mathematical Society(BIMS), and were analyzed in terms of their macro-organizational structure. An eleven-move structure was identified in the analyzed corpus, while it was also found that the research articles in the corpus did not follow the conventional Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion structure found in many other disciplines. Methods and Discussion sections which are frequently encountered in research articles of many other disciplines were missing in the analyzed articles. It is argued th...
