Kerala, the southernmost state of the country lies at the extreme South-West of the Indian penins... more Kerala, the southernmost state of the country lies at the extreme South-West of the Indian peninsula (between 8o17’and 12o47’N latitudes and 74o52’ and 77o24’ E longitude). It covers a geographic area of 38,863 km2. On the west is the Arabian sea along its 587.8 km long coast line and in the eastern side of the State lie the mountains of the Western Ghats. Forests of the Western Ghats played a major role in providing biomass for diverse agricultural practices. However, land-use changes, particularly conversion of natural forest for other uses, impacted ecological functions of the forest ecosystem, and brought about drastic changes in the soil chemistry, setting in motion to the process of forest degradation and affecting Kerala’s life line of forty-four rivers.
