Several studies have reported that individuals diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer are at higher risk of subsequent or prior diagnoses of second primary malignancies. We report a series of five cases with concomitant basal cell carcinoma and breast cancer; in two cases the basal cell carcinoma was diagnosed after the breast cancer and in three cases it preceded it. Considering the high frequency and low mortality of basal cell carcinomas, they offer an excellent opportunity to study the factors that put some individuals at increased risk of multiple malignancies.

The clinical picture is often characterized by restrictive cardiomyopathy. We report the case of a 41-year-old female patient admitted to the Department of Cardiology with clinical signs of right heart failure: congested jugular veins, hepatomegaly, peripheral edema, ascites associated with atrial fibrillation, low values of arterial blood pressure and oliguria. Echocardiographic findings were helpful for the diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis: enlarged atrial cavities, normal size ventricles, thickened ventricular septum and posterior left ventricle wall with normal left ventricular ejection fraction, mitral and tricuspid regurgitation. Two-dimensional echocardiography revealed additional features: thickened papillary muscles and a specific "granular sparkling" appearance of the thickened cardiac walls - probably due to the amyloid deposit. Gingival biopsy showing amorphous eosinophilic material located in t...

We report the case of a 40-year-old Caucasian female with a family history of neoplasia who was referred to our service witha two-month history of inflammatory joint pain. On examination, the patient had inflammatory arthritis, mainly involving the peripheral joints, sacroiliac joint pain, and numerous papulonodular mucocutaneous lesions, including periungual “coral beads”. Imaging tests revealed erosive arthritis with synovitis and tenosynovitis, sacroiliac joint changes, as well as papulonodular mucosal lesions in the nasal vestibule, the oropharyngeal mucosa, and supraglottic larynx. She tested positive for HLA-B*07 (Human Leukocyte Antigen B*07) and HLA-B*08, ANA (antinuclear antibodies), RF (rheumatoid factor), anti-Ro52, anti-SSA/Ro, and anti-SSB/La antibodies. The skin biopsy was suggestive of MRH, showing a histiocyte infiltrate and f...

For this reason, we aimed to test the role of ultrahigh frequency ultrasound in follow-up of flap viability. Further on, we aimed to analyze if the chimeric groin flap can be mobilized in a sandwiched position without affecting its vascular supply by twisting its pedicle. Methods A total of 12 male Wistar rats, split into three groups, were used. Group A (n = 4) had the chimeric groin flap repositioned in a sandwich position on the anterior abdominal wall and underwent ultrahigh frequency ultrasound follow-up at days 10 and 14. Group B (n = 4) also had the flaps sandwiched, however, at day 14 the vascularity of flaps was proven by infusion of nontargeted ultrasound contrast agents, after which flaps were sent for histological analysis. Group C (C1 n = 2, C2 n = 2) was the control group. In C1 the chimeric groin flap was harvested and sent for...

Because it is non-ionizing and non-invasive, Terahertz (THz)-based detection represents a very attractive tool for repeated assessments, patient monitoring, and follow-up. Cancer acts as the second leading cause of death in many regions, and current predictions estimate a continuous increasing trend. Of all types of tumors, digestive cancers represent an important percentage and their incidence is expected to increase more rapidly than other tumor types due to unhealthy lifestyle habits. Because it can precisely differentiate between different types of molecules, depending on water content, the information obtained through THz-based scanning could have several uses in the management of cancer patients and, more importantly, in the early detection of different solid tumors. The purpose of this manuscript is to offer a comprehensive overview of current data available on...

H. pylori infection increases the risk for gastric pathology, but could also have consequences on cardio-metabolic status. Obesity has as epidemic growth, and the only efficient long-term treatment for morbidly obese patients is currently surgery. Although of vital importance, the preoperative assessment is not standardized, including the aspects related to H. pylori infection. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori (Hp) infection in a group of patients referred to bariatric surgery and the agreement of two commonly used methods for its diagnosis. We included 70 asymptomatic obese patients consecutively for 14 months, who were evaluated by serology (anti-Hp IgG antibodies) and by histology (gastroscopy with gastric mucosa biopsy). If diagnosed, H. pylori infection was standard treated and afterwards, all patients underwent lapa...

Herein, ADSC-differentiated adipogenic lineages were used in rat burn wounds to evaluate wound healing potential. ADSCs were cultivated using six different adipogenic differentiation conditions (IBMX ± insulin, IBMX for 5 days, high and low Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium) and in vitro morphological changes and cell proliferations during adipogenic differentiation were recorded. Intermediate burn wounds were inflicted in 15 Wistar male rats. Afterwards, the rats were divided into five groups for subcutaneous injections under the wounds: control; ADSCs; differentiated adipocytes (-IBMX+INSULIN and +IBMX[D1-5]+INSULIN) and fat prepared by Coleman technique. Macroscopic changes and histology were documented for 3 weeks. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to analyze cell growth and wound healing with a statistical level set of P < .05. Induction cocktails significantly reduced proliferation and induced lipid droplet accumulation. Conditioning without insulin induced the least lipid accumulation, while discontinuing IBMX generated larger adipocytes (P < .001). Adipogenic differentiated ADSCs had similar wound healing abilities with ADSC and fat injections, but differentiated adipocytes (+IBMX[D1-5]+INSULIN) and fat grafting accelerated the early healing process relative to ADSC (P < .001). Reduced fibrosis and mild inflammatory infiltration limited to superficial dermis were observed in +IBMX(D1-5)+INSULIN and fat injection groups, while those reactions were mild to moderate in ADSC group. Differentiated adipocytes achieve similar wound healing results compared with ADSC and fat injections, but differentiated adipocytes (+IBMX[D1-5]+INSULIN) and fat grafting accelerate early healing relative to ADSC.

In this study, our propose was to evaluate the histopathological changes corellated with immunohistochemical results demonstrating the types of cellular infiltration and proliferative activity of gastric mucosa infected with H. pylori. Gastric endoscopic examinations was performed in 468 patients with anti-H. pylori antibodies and dispeptic phenomena. Snippets harvested endobiopsic stomach were fixed in formalin and processed by paraffine inclusion. Histological sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosine and Giemsa. In 65 cases of endobiopsic fragments (36 deep chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia, glandular atrophy and intraepithelial neoplasia and 29 carcinomas) immunohistochemical reactions were performed by applying reagents for evidence of H. pylori colonies, of T lymphocytes (CD3) and macrophages (CD68) and Ki-67 reagent for proliferating nuclear antigen labelling. Endobiopsic specimen found in all H. pylori or by Giemsa staining or by anti-H. pylori antibodies when they were in small numbers. Histologically, were diagnosed : 463 superficial and deep chronic gastritis associated with premalignant lesions, 29 carcinomas, 2 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and an adematous polyp. Immunohistochemically, inflammatory infiltrate consisted of numerous T lymphocytes, macrophages and lymphoid follicles. Foveolar cell nuclei, in areas of intraepithelial neoplasia and carcinomatous cells were intensely stained with Ki-67, demonstrating increased proliferation. In gastric infection with H. pylori, inflammatory infiltrat is composed of abundant macrophages and T lymphocytes. Ki-67 was absent or minimal in chronic gastritis, while in areas of intraepithelial neoplasia was positive in both foveolar and coating epithelium. Anti-H. pylori antibodies in human serum remains one of the simplest methods to detect H. pylori, therefore it plays an important role in practice. Medical eradication of bacteria may cancel inflammatory changes, metaplasia and proliferation of gastric mucosa and thus it prevents the cascade of carcinogenesis.
