Students developed content, presented seminars, evaluate their peers objectively (assigning grades) and subjective (selecting according to preference) and also performed the self-assessment. Based on the grades attributed by the students, the ability to evaluate by peers by comparing variances was evaluated. From the results obtained, we can conclude that there is a mutual influence on the two types of evaluations used in this research. Students were able to evaluate their peers and also self-evaluation. The 316L stainless steel (316L SS) is one of the most used metallic materials for implants, due t... more The 316L stainless steel (316L SS) is one of the most used metallic materials for implants, due to its high mechanical properties and low cost. However, it is bioinert. One possibility to improve its biocompatibility is the production of a composite with β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP) addition. This study investigated the mechanical behavior of 316L SS/β-TCP composites through powder metallurgy. For this, used were 3 compositions, with 0 %, 5 % and 20 % of β-TCP. The compositions with 5% and 20% were milled during 10 hours with a mass/sphere ratio of 1:10 and 350 rpm. All compositions were uniaxially pressed with 619 MPa and sintered during 1 hour at 1100°C. The microstructural and mechanical evaluations were performed through scanning electron microscopy, density and compressive strength. The results indicated that, by increasing the percentage of β-TCP in the compositions, the mechanical resistance decreases, as a consequence of its low load support.

This study aims to reuse the chips from the duplex stainless–steel UNS S31803 by powder metallurgy with the addition of Vanadium carbide (VC). The mechanical milling was performed using a planetary ball mill for 50 h at a milling speed of 350 rpm and a ball-to-powder weight ratio of 20:1, and the addition of 3 wt % of VC. The material submitted to milling with an addition of carbide has a particle size of less than 140 μm. After milling, the sample went through a stress relief treatment performed at 1050 °C for 1 h and the isostatic compaction process loaded with 300 MPa....

Previous studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effect of ethanol extracts of these species and identified that sesquiterpene lactones contribute to this activity. AIM OF THE STUDY Gout is an acute inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints. Inflammation in joints induces oxidative stress in defense cells, releasing pro-inflammatory mediators. This study has three objectives: (1) to demonstrate the effects of sesquiterpene lactones lychnopholide and eremantholide C isolated from L. trichocarpha and goyazensolide isolated from L. passerina on arthritis induced by MSU crystals in C57BL6 mice; (2) to determine whether or not these compounds can inhibit the migration of neutrophils and the release of TNF-α and IL-1β cytokines in the inflammation region; and (3) to evaluate the effects of sesquiterpene lactones on the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the cartilage of C57BL/6 mice with gouty arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antioxidant activities of sesquiterpene lactones in C57BL/6 mice with MSU crystal-induced arthritis were evaluated. In our experimental model, the mice were injected with MSU crystals in the tibiofemoral joint to induce arthritis and then treated with indomethacin, vitamin C, and sesquiterpene lactones. Nociception was evaluated before and after inflammation induction and treatments, neutrophil migration, IL-1β and TNF-α concentrations, and SOD and CAT activities. RESULTS Sesquiterpene lactones exerted an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting neutrophil migration and TNF-α production. These compounds also demonstrated antinociceptive and antioxidant activities. CONCLUSION Lychnopholide, eremantholide C, and goyazensolide improved the inflammation induced by MSU crystals by inhibiting the migration of neutrophils to the inflamed area and by blocking the release of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. In addition, sesquiterpene lactones reduced oxidative stress by activating SOD and CAT. These results suggest that sesquiterpene lactones have anti-gout activity through the inflammation, pain, and oxidative stress pathways.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Lychnophora trichocarpha and Lychnophora passerina are species use... more ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Lychnophora trichocarpha and Lychnophora passerina are species used in folk medicine to treat inflammation, pain, and rheumatism. Previous studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effect of ethanol extracts of these species and identified that sesquiterpene lactones contribute to this activity. AIM OF THE STUDY Gout is an acute inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints. Inflammation in joints induces oxidative stress in defense cells, releasing pro-inflammatory mediators. This study has three objectives: (1) to demonstrate the effects of sesquiterpene lactones lychnopholide and eremantholide C isolated from L. trichocarpha and goyazensolide isolated from L. passerina on arthritis induced by MSU crystals in C57BL6 mice; (2) to determine whether or not these compounds can inhibit the migration of neutrophils and the release of TNF-α and IL-1β cytokines in the inflammation region; and (3) to evaluate the effects of sesquiterpene lactones on the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the cartilage of C57BL/6 mice with gouty arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antioxidant activities of sesquiterpene lactones in C57BL/6 mice with MSU crystal-induced arthritis were evaluated. In our experimental model, the mice were injected with MSU crystals in the tibiofemoral joint to induce arthritis and then treated with indomethacin, vitamin C, and sesquiterpene lactones. Nociception was evaluated before and after inflammation induction and treatments, neutrophil migration, IL-1β and TNF-α concentrations, and SOD and CAT activities. RESULTS Sesquiterpene lactones exerted an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting neutrophil migration and TNF-α production. These compounds also demonstrated antinociceptive and antioxidant activities. CONCLUSION Lychnopholide, eremantholide C, and goyazensolide improved the inflammation induced by MSU crystals by inhibiting the migration of neutrophils to the inflamed area and by blocking the release of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. In addition, sesquiterpene lactones reduced oxidative stress by activating SOD and CAT. These results suggest that sesquiterpene lactones have anti-gout activity through the inflammation, pain, and oxidative stress pathways.

The Ti–30Ta alloy presents an elastic modulus E = 69 GPa that is close to that of bone (E = 17–25 GPa) than Ti cp (E = 105 GPa). In previous studies, titanium alloy with tantalum showed the elastic modulus decrease in comparison with that of commercially pure (cp) titanium. In this study, surface modification on Ti-30Ta alloy was investigated. Titanium and tantalum were melted, homogenized, cold-worked by a rotary swaging process and solubilized. The anodization process was performed in electrolyte contained glycerol + NH4F 0.25% at 30 V using seven different durations—4 h, 5 h, 6 h, 7 h, 8 h, 9 h, and 10 h and annealed at 530 °C for 1 h. The surface topography was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and contact angle.
