between 1818 and 1825, the administrators Pierre Bernard Milius and Pierre Clément
Laussat distinguished themselves by their zeal in the fight against the illegal slave
trade. Less known is the project they shared to recruit Malagasy indentured servants to supply the necessary workforce for colonial cultures and sugar factories of the two
colonies. Through this project and these two men’s position on the slave trade, we
question the difficulty of certain early 19th century European administrators to
establish a difference between African indentured servants and slaves.

This experience, which lasted forty years, was an economic failure with a heavy human toll. The history of this agricultural penitentiary highlights a real continuity between the slave colony and the penal colony.

This figure spent a lot of time indeed reinventing his life. The purpose of this article is to detect truth from false in the life of this man condemned to the penal colony in French Guiana in 1927. We return here on his parents, childhood, first offences and convict years. We will also seek to establish how and when he became an artist.
