Material And Methods The study was carried out on 500 panoramic view images. Visual tracing assisted assessment of thousand sides (left and right) was done. Sexual dimorphism of left and right mandibular ramus parts (sigmoid notch bordered by coronoid and condylar process). The shape of coronoid process, condyle, and sigmoid notch were interpreted. Results The most prevalent shape of sigmoid notch was wide variant (41.2%), condyle was convex type (50%) and coronoid was round (53.4%). Condyle and coronoid showed asymmetry between right and left with p-value 0.001 and 0.019, respectively. This study has illustrated that triangular-shaped coronoid was more in females (p-value 0.012). Conclusion Sexu...

The present study was done using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans to evaluate the morphologic structure of the frontal sinuses and compare it with the width of nasal, cranial, maxillary and mandibular width which might help us in sex determination. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted using 142 full field of view (FOV) scans of patients archived from the department. The width of the nose, cranium, maxilla, and mandibular width was measured and compared with the frontal sinus between the two sexes. Results: A paired t-test was done to compare the linear measurements for both sexes' right and left frontal sinuses. The measurements were higher in males when compared to females. There was a statistically significant asymmetry (larger dimension on the left side) of the anterioposterior (p-value of 0.012) and superior-inferior dimension...

Its applications and popularity has grown over the years and is practised by various healthcare professionals for lower back pain, migraine, knee osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, nausea and vomiting, headache, dysmenorrhea etc. Its use has been extended to the field of dentistry and promising results have emerged in cases of temporomandibular disorders, dental pain, chronic facial pain, xerostomia and gagging. This manuscript reviews the uses of acupuncture in dentistry and its future growth.

Aims: To assess various factors leading to initiation and discontinuation of tobacco and to understand different psychological aspects behind its initiation. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted among 300 past and current tobacco users visiting Oral Medicine Clinics of Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, India. A self-administered questionnaire was used to gather details related to age of initiation of tobacco usage; frequency, duration and pattern of consumption; their knowledge towards tobacco hazards; and, reasons for initiation and discontinuation of the same. Results: Respondents were divided into three age groups (15-30, 31-50, and >51 years). Majority of 92.7%, 95.1% and 92.3% in Group I, II and III respectively were aware of harmful effects of tobacco. Relief from tension was the main reason for initiation of tobacco usage. A total of 29 (10.7%) had disco...

Although dental professionals are at an increased risk of COVID-19 infection, currently, very little is known about how oral health professionals and their professions could be affected by the pandemic. This study aims to investigate dentists' perceptions on present and future dental practice in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted an embedded mixed-methods study at Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, with Indian dentists registered with the Dental Council of India. Results: Of the 976 participating dentists, 61% were females, 32% were 40 years of age or younger. Nearly half of the respondents (54%) acknowledged that the lockdown measures caused them a severe financial burden, and 56% were seriously concerned about being a source of infection to their family, friends, and community. Although 79% felt very comfortable or somewhat comfortable going back to...

Apart from teeth, which holds valuable potential for human identification, the role of orofacial structures cannot be ignored. One of the areas to be considered is the study of lip prints (cheiloscopy). Aim: The present study was carried out to investigate and evaluate the uniqueness of lip prints, their role in personal identifica tion and for particular lip print pattern identification among different gender. Methodology: Each subject was given a code number to hide the actual sex from the analyser. The lips of the subject were cleaned thoroughl y and a dark coloured lipstick was applied with a brush in a single stroke, evenly on the vermilion border and let it dry for 2 minutes. A lip impression was made on the strip of cellophane tape on glued portion which was stuck to the white bond paper. Results: It was observed that lip prints were unique to an individual and the patterns vari...

Macrodontia is the termused to describe teeth which are larger than normal. Three types of macrodontia are recognized: true generalizedmacrodontia, relative generalized macrodontia and macrodontia involving a single tooth. Literature review reveals that generalized macrodontia is usually associated with syndromes. Macrodontia may be associated with othersyndromes; early recognition of this anomaly is essential to provide proper management. There are many casesreported with macrodontia associated with syndrome, however, our case is particularly unique as it had generalized macrodontia, and was not associated with any syndrome. Macrodontia may cause problems with aesthetics andalso crowding if there is discrepancy between the dimensions of the teeth and size of the jaw treatment.
