This chapter focuses on two episodes in Genesis which have traditionally been regarded as Yahwistic source (J) and Elohistic source (E) accounts of the same incident. This material concerns the departure of Hagar from the household of Abraham as recorded in chs xvi and xxi. The outcomes of the two episodes are different. In ch. xvi Hagar is commanded by the angel of Yahweh to return and submit to her mistress (xvi 9). In contrast, ch. xxi records how Hagar and her son go and dwell in the wilderness of Paran, where the boy grows up and eventually marries an Egyptian. In xxi 1-7 the birth of Isaac to Sarah is recorded. Ultimately, it is this event which leads to the expulsion of Hagar. Keywords: Elohistic source (E); Genesis xvi; Genesis xxi; Hagar traditions; Pentateuch; Yahwistic source (J)
