Data were collected through a semi-structured multiple choice questionnaire applied to 400 cattle breeders in all microregions of the state, in May and November 2012. The questions contained the following indicators: profile of the property and the breeder, herd conditions and technical conditions on herd registration. The cattle-raising scenario is predominantly characterized by family activity, with the majority of producers over 50 years of age, who are without great prospects for technological innovation, inserted in an environment where human resource renewal faces difficulties. Data analysis verified the prevalence of herds with up to 50 cattle farmed on properties with up to 50 ha, without individual identification of the animals. These results, coupled with the fact that the catt...

O rebanho particular tambem apresentou variabilidade genetica (Ho=0,374 e H...

Breed data from 10 cows were used to study correlations between the physiological thermoregulatory characteristics and meteorological variables in the morning and afternoon shifts of the dry and rainy seasons of 2011 and 2012. The meteorological variables were: air temperature (TA ), humidity (AU), globe temperature, and humidity index (BGT). The physiological responses of animals to the environment were: respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), sweating rate (SR), and heart rate (HR). Despite the significant differences in TA and AU (P 0.05). TA, in relation to shifts, had a high positive correlation (0.85), and this high correlation reflects the high temperatures reported, 7.07 and 7.58 °C, in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Despite the significant daily weather variation, the responses obtained for the physiological variables of Girolando cows durin...

Direct and maternal additive genetic effects and direct and maternal permanent environmental effects were included as random in the models. The contemporary groups were included as fixed effects and goat age at kidding was included as a covariable (linear and quadratic). The choice of the best model was based on the AIC, BIC and AICc criteria. Variance estimates of the four random effects increased as the animals aged. Direct heritability (h2) rose from 0.13 to 0.40 with age, whereas maternal heritability showed a low value. Genetic correlations of weight between closer ages were high. The most suitable random regression model to compare the fitting of random effects was that which employed the Legendre polynomials of...

However, its application to model growth traits of Polled Nellore cattle has been little studied. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate polynomial functions of different orders and segment numbers to model effects associated with the Polled Nellore cattle growth curve. For this purpose, we used 15,148 weight records of 3,115 animals aged between 1 and 660 days and reared in northern Brazil and born between 1995 and 2010. Random effects were modeled using B-spline polynomials. As random effects, we considered the direct and maternal genetic additives, as well as direct and maternal permanent environments. As fixed effects were included contemporary group, cow age at calving (linear and quadratic) and fourth-order Legendre polynomials to represent average growth curve. The residue was modeled by c...

Age polynomial functions of different orders were evaluated using a random-effect modeling associated with a genetic study of cattle growth curves. For this purpose, weight records (15,148) were performed in Polled Nellore bovines (3,115), aged between 1 and 660 days, reared in northern Brazil and born between 1995 and 2010. The fixed effects of analytical models comprised age-matched groups, heifer calving age (linear and quadratic), and fourth-order Legendre age polynomial (cubic), depicting the mean growth curve. Besides, different order functions were considered for random effects, so that (co) variance associated with genetic effects (direct and maternal) and permanent environmental effects (animal and maternal) could be modeled. Residual variance was fitted by six heterogeneous classes throughout the analyzed ...
