To support breast cancer control in Peru, this study aims to determine the cost-effectiveness of different breast cancer control interventions relevant for the Peruvian context. Methods We performed a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) according to WHO-CHOICE guidelines, from a healthcare perspective. Different screening, early detection, palliative, and treatment interventions were evaluated using mathematical modeling. Effectiveness estimates were based on observational studies, modeling, and on information from Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN). Resource utilizations and unit costs were based on estimates from INEN and observational studies. Cost-effectiveness estimates are in 2012 United States dollars (US$) per disability adjusted life year (DALY) averted. Results The current breast cancer program in Peru ($8,426 p...

We describe epidemiological, clinical and pathologic features of patients with lymphoma diagnosed at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia (HNCH), center of reference of Lima north. Methods: Retrospective study of 433 patients with lymphoma diagnosed from 1998 to 2008 at the HNCH. Results: The mean age was 44.8 years (range 1 to 93 years), the ratio was 1.5:1 for male and female respectively, 85.9% were Non Hodgkin Lymphoma (LNH). In Hodgkin diseases’ patients the mean age was 34 years and ratio male: female was 2:1; whereas, in NHL, the average age was 45.9 years and ratio male: female was 1.4:1. The more frequently symptoms were weight loss (40.5%) and lymphadenopathy (36.7%). The 55.08% were clinical stage I-II. The most frequent location was nodal (55.1%). More frequently extra nodal locations were: gastrointesti...

The relationship between depression and cancer has been widely studied, affects approximately 15% to 25% of cancer patients. However, there is little research in latin population. We report the results of evaluate the frequency of depressive disorder in Peruvian oncologic outpatients and describe clinical and epidemiological features Methods: A descriptive transversal study was performed to 70 patients that attended to oncology clinic at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. Data was collected through a survey that included a clinical demographic record and the spanish version – ICD 10 of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for the diagnosis of depressive episode. Results: The 52% of the participants were females. The mean age was 57 years (18- 83 y) Breast cancer (21%) and lymphoma non Hodgkin (21%) were the most common types of cancer. The mean period from diag...

We show the results of treatment with anti-EGF vaccine in a cohort of patients with metastatic NSCLC after progressing to first line therapy. We evaluated immunogenicity, safety, treatment response and effect on survival. Methods: 12 patients with metastatic NSCLC after progressing to first-line therapy received anti EGF-vaccine alone or in combination with chemotherapy. Results: From October 2009 until August 2011, 12 patients started treatment with anti EGF vaccine; mean age 56.5 (42-79 y); 66.7% male; ECOG 0 and 1: 41.7% and 58,3% respectively. Adenocarcinoma (50%), bronchioloalveolar (33.3%), adenosquamous (16.7%). Metastatic sites: lung (41.7%), pleura (25%), CNS (16.7%), Kidney (8.3%). In addition to chemotherapy previous used: radiotherapy (50%), surgery (41.7%), erlotinib (41.7%), b...

Microplastics in the environment can be in the form of fibers and/or particles, being the former the most abundant in the marine environment, representing up to 95% of total plastics. The aim of this work was to compare the content of microplastics among intertidal fish with different feeding type. Our results show that omnivorous fish presented a higher amount of microplastic fibers than registered in herbivores and carnivores. Moreover, lower condition factors (K) were found in omnivorous specimens with higher microplastic content. We hypothesized that the type of feeding resulted in different microplastic ingestion, with species with wider range of food sources as omnivores with higher rates. Futures studies carried out to evaluate the biological impacts of microplastics on marine organisms, and microplastics cycling on the marine environment should consider the type of feeding of the studied...
