Jewish men enlisted with both the Union and the Confederate armies. Historians Simon Wolf and Mel Young estimate that at least 7,000 Jewish men fought in the war. On the home front, "Jewish welfare societies, social organizations, and synagogues, as well as individuals, took an active role in the war relief and patriotic activities." (Korn, American Jewry and the Civil War, 100.) Across the country, Jewish men and women ministered to the wounded, the widowed and the orphans. In establishing communal charitable societies, Jewish women organized and raised money to support impoverished families. Primary sources describing the war from a Jewish female perspective are not abundant. However, the surviving manuscripts and documents, mainly memoirs, journals, and letters written by Jewish women, depict numerous tales of immeasurable suffering, self-sacrifice and acts of bravery.

The most significant is exposure, namely dissemination. With millions of Internet users worldwide, e-journals reach a large and diversified readership. Restricted by its limited financial resources, print journals in the Humanities are targeted at a very small and exclusive readership. With the present-day flourishing of mass media and the affordability of the Internet as a viable tool for the dissemination of scholarship, paperbound thinking is rapidly loosing ground, and the “cultivated faith in the printed word” is dissipating. “The argument against electronic publication… that it cannot employ the same safeguards and guarantee the supposedly high, reliable standards that have been the hallmark of the print publications of Academe” is being challenged by the appearance and sustainability of high-quality e-journals. This paper examines the role e-journals play in the vast and often debatable sector of digital humanities. It addresses the concerns of academics regarding publishing their work electronically; in addition, it answers a few questions that are still relevant: Why go solely online? What is changed in the process of publishing? How do e-journals compare to print journals? Is the digital publishing route advisable for capturing and attracting younger audiences? It also touches very briefly upon the economics of this model (an e-journal in the Humanities) as distinct from print journals. And finally, how concerns about readership led this panelist in this direction.

This anonymous second-century work seems like a philosophical account of a world different from any known earlier. The complexity and enigmatic theology of the work have left many researchers bewildered and undecided concerning the identity of the work’s author and his religious background. In order to clarify this apparent perplexity and uncover the author’s identity and intention, this study undertakes a particular type of literary investigation that was first introduced to the field of literary criticism by Russian formalist and structuralist, Boris Uspensky (1937-).

The fact that Hendel’s early writing career suffered from extended hiatus has rarely been discussed by her or any of her critics. This article sheds light on a feasible explanation for the gaps in Hendel’s prolificacy. Was it due to innocent bouts of writer’s block, or was it the result of other factors, such as the unpredictable and turbulent nature of her marriage to a modernist painter, who was obsessed with death and dying?
