This paper objective is to implement GEOBIA methods and techniques to the hierarchical landscape zoning in a study area at the South Region of Brazil and to discuss the potential role of such innovative techniques in this field of research. The approach based on GEOBIA multiresolution segmentation of geomorphometric data, compatibilization with rural census tracts and multivariate data analysis appeared to be a way to semi-automate landscape zoning according to hierarchical scale principles.

Sugar cane expansion is one of the most important LUCC processes in Brazil, whose expansion has been monitored since the early 2000 within the framework of INPE’s CANASAT project. In this work, a methodology is proposed to investigate land use/cover changes in a region of sugar cane expansion based on integrating CANASAT maps, remote sensing data and agricultural statistics in a GIS, and assess, in particular, which land use/cover classes are converted to give place to sugar cane expansion in the 2003-2009 period. The area under study is the municipality of Barretos (São Paulo State), which suffered a strong expansion of sugar cane culture during the 2003-2009 period of study, accompanied by a 46% reduction in pasture areas, and a 40% increase in cattle. A land use/ cover map for the year of 2003 was produced ba...

In this context, adaptive governance and the articulation of actors in networks are strategies for coping with this type of situation. This article analyzes water governance in the Paraíba Valley in light of the challenges posed by the 2013-2015 water crisis. Objective is to analyze the network of actors, exploring ways for greater participation of civil society in socioecological adaptation actions. The method used was Social Network Analysis. The conclusion is that there is a mismatch between civil society and the state to negotiate positions. The paper identifies opportunities for enhancing connections between civil society and academia and broadening engagement and cooperation with a focus on adaptive water governance.

Data from satellite imagery, topographic, vegetation and other maps are combined inside AMAZONIA, a geographic information system covering the entire region. As a result, the extent and the rate of deforestation are being more accurately estimated and the refinement of models to assess the impact of deforestation in different physical processes was made possible by the availabitily of georeferenced data. Key-Words: Geographic Information Systems, Deforestation, Amazon

Based on the literature about risk, vulnerability and adaptation to disasters and on a case study conducted in the Northern coast of São Paulo - Brazil, we summarize the converging themes in the analysis of vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, which are divided in three components: (i) interdisciplinarity for studies about environment and society, requiring multiscale analysis, (ii) the integration of land use management instruments, and (iii) risk governance and communication. Based on the results of a risk perception survey (914 interviewees), we analyze vulnerability according to three interconnected axes (physical risk, social vulnerability and protagonism) by emphasizing the role played by the population in face of physical risk situations, as a way to guide integrated and participa...
