The first is the 1985-1986 winter belonging to the 'westerly category' with well-developed H2 wave activity in the stratosphere. The second is the 1986-1987 winter belonging to the 'easterly category' with well-developed H1 wave activity. In both winter periods,

Special attention is given to the time changes of the basic wave characteristics (period, amplitude, and phase), as well as to their connection with the stratospheric warming in that period. Planetary wave amplification was observed before the major stratospheric warming at the end of December 1984, as well as considerable phase changes during the stratospheric warming.
