This process had continued in history till the 19th century and established the culture of adults’ city architecture. The children had to fit themselves in the adult’s city. It is mainly during the 1960s when new trends in city architecture have introduced new considerations for children by calling for livability in cities. This trend has increased in the 1990s by the sustainable city trends and the present initiatives of Children Friendly City. But studying contemporary cities can raise an important argument that contemporary cities have not developed children architecture. It requires new ways of understanding children’s needs in the city and how can architecture contain these needs. These two components can establish children architecture as a new reality in our cities

It requires continuous development strategies to meet the new economic and social requirements. Historical evidences show that architecture and urban design can be important tools to stimulate the urban growth by establishing urban cores to contain, facilitate and stimulate economic and social activities. The city’s history shows that the city center is an important area in any city for its dominating role in creating the city’s architectural characteristics and supporting its economic and social functions. The cities have developed different patterns of city centers in order to achieve the urban growth. This study shows how can architecture and urban design be used as a strategy to create livable city centers and how can this livability be an important source for urban growth? The paper is using three models of city centers Brasilia, Oslo and Dubai where all have attempted using the city center to generate urban growth but by...

It is important both for the local society and the international society. The historical learning of the urban development emphasizes the necessity of using the heritage as an important source for sustainable urban development strategies in any country. But architectural heritage in many countries with multi-ethnic societies are suffering from ignorance and suppression because of using architecture as a target in the power struggle. This paper attempts to answer how and why such phenomena occurs, what are the consequences on the sustainable development of these nations. The paper will discuss it as a global phenomenon which had been exited since early human history and will use Erbil in Kurdistan, North Iraq as a case study.

But studying contemporary cities can raise an important argument that contemporary cities have not developed children architecture. It requires new ways of understanding children's needs in the city and how can architecture contain these needs. These two components can establish children architecture as a new reality in our cities METHOD The paper is discussing the historical roots of adults' city architecture and the present cities efforts to develop children-friendly city architecture. The paper is using three basic components of the city center to show how do they provide children with their needs. These are: Pedestrian network, Public Outdoor Spaces and Indoor Public Spaces. The basic needs are safety, playing, learning and social life. Studying the components are mainly related to 12-17-year-old age group who have many common biological, psychological and emotional characters. Their common characters create common functional space needs which are influenced by city's indoor and outdoor space conditions. The paper is using cases from the Scandinavian countries which have applied many urban development strategies since 1960s' to promote children's growth and learning. The paper is comparing the Scandinavian city centers with cases from other countries which have applied different design strategies and have created different conditions for children's needs.

This tradition has continued into the present time in large number of countries causing many challenges to smaller cities to have proper urban development and the national development sustainability. Sustainable urban national development will require adapting policies and strategies to create balanced urban fabric between the large and small cities. But there are many challenges to achieve such goal particularly economic and political. There are large differences between countries about this issue. Norway is one of the countries which has applied different strategies to deal with this problem.

As a consequence, large number of architectural cultures had been removed from the earth or ended as ruins. Unfortunately, this problem is not only from the past but it is also taking place in the present civilized age This paper is building on case studies to show how this phenomenon is rooted in the history and which consequences it has into the continuity of the local architecture in forming the present built environment. The case studies are historical evidences based explanation, prediction and theory about the extent to which elite groups or dominating ethnical groups contribute to form the architecture of the multi-ethnic) countries. The study’s evidences show the necessity of finding solutions for this problem in education, decision making and applied projects. To make the solution sustainable, the study is suggesting and considering the architecture as a human)right for all ethnical groups. Such shift can help us to secure all nations’ architecture as human resources for present and future generations.

It shows that our cities and buildings need to change the common method of identifying the spaces as indoor and outdoor spaces. The study shows that there is a third space which can be called the in-between space. This space is a link between indoor and outdoor, it transfers the functions between the two spaces. The study has analyzed and described the existing, character, organization, design, and role of this identical area in different cities by using a historical method. The target of this method was to show how these issues related to the in-between spaces have been changed gradually from old cities to the present time. The finding of this study which is in-between space as an identical space can help urban designers and architects along with large consequences about human behavior, social life, organization, and regulation of this space. The study ends with several questions that require further research.
