Dr. Lisa Marie Portugal holds a PhD in Leadership for Higher Education, a Master of Arts in Education with a concentration in Secondary Education, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts with a minor in Fine Arts. She is a personal and professional life coach, author, university professor, PhD chair, committee member, and a faculty supervisor - mentor to teacher candidates. She currently instructs coursework at the undergraduate, graduate, EdD, and PhD levels in the College of Education.
Dr. Portugal has taught online and ground campus 6th through 12th grades in various disciplines and she was a librarian. Throughout her career as an educator and mentor, she has been a faculty member for 13 universities and 7 charter/public schools.
Dr. Portugal has written an academic book and various peer-reviewed articles. Her goal is to continue to mentor people how to reach their personal and professional goals, teach online coursework world-wide, research, write, and publish. She is published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Academic Leadership the Online Journal, Advancing Women in Leadership Online Journal, Distance Learning Administration (OJDLA), Higher Education Perspectives, the Online Journal of Distance Education and e-Learning, the Journal of Instructional Research (JIR), and the International Journal of Online Pedagogy and Course Design (IJOPCD). She is on the Review Board for the Journal of Instructional Research (JIR). Her expertise and research interests include student engagement and success, student retention, adult learning theory, adult, nontraditional, and at-risk learners, faculty retention, hiring practices, faculty burn-out, best practices in online learning, emerging technology in course design and instruction, online education, learning styles, diversity leadership, transformational leadership, and the Community of Inquiry Framework. She integrates theory into practice through conducting research in these areas.
Previous to Dr. Portugal’s work in the Education and mentoring professions, she was in advertising management and sales for 12 years in newspaper, magazine, TV, and outdoor. She was a general manager, regional manager, sales manager, and a senior-level account executive.
Dr. Portugal is a cowboy boot, punk rock T-shirt wearing, tech-junkie who enjoys riding her Honda XR200R dirt bike in the Arizona desert. She is an artist (oil paint, watercolor, drawing, and photography) and a collector of Native American jewelry, cameras, records, books, religious art, and antiques. She plays the keyboard, guitar, violin, and cello. She has two chickens (Matilda and Olivia), two cats (Sam and Patches), and two poodles (Mozart and Constanzie).

This paper discusses the enormous impact distance learning has had on traditional higher education and addresses emerging leadership roles within those constructs. The writer will address and discuss qualities that are necessary for leaders and the success of their distance education initiatives. Topics discussed include critical issues relating to the evolution and continuation of distance learning programs such as globalization, consistent lack of federal and state educational funding, a growing student population, and the emergence of the Internet. In addition, new technologies in distance education are highlighted.
