The author points to the need for a deeper reflection on this phenomenon, aimed at restoring the term “satire” as necessary neutral for effective use in the analytical-interpretative practice. Taking into account the autocratic potential of satire, the author suggests to look at it as a form of challenge to the reader, which provokes the search for a “new perspective”.

Codzienność Warszawy w latach 1954–1955[The city rising from ruins. Daily life inWarsaw in the years 1954–1955] (Warsaw 2020). Analysing the selection of source materials, the methodology and the structure of the work, theauthor of the review points to a clear link between Chutnik’s field of interest as a cultural studies scholar, her writing and social activism. In the reviewer’s opinion, both the method of presenting the problems and the emotional attitude to her hometown, visible in the narrative, testify to Chutnik’s engaged attitude as a researcher.

The author compares “citation from reality” to parody, another rewriting strategy, and discovers that neither of them is satire-specific. Both practises can, on the other hand, serve to create a grotesque and realistic vision of the world. The utility of rewriting in order to articulate the satiric intention is strictly related here to the fact that the very act of rewriting, that is putting content in a new context, is conducive to irony. As a means of expression, irony is, after all, constitutive for a critical approach towards reality, so typical of satire

Reading the story as the writer’s settlement with himself, the author underscores the key role of the metaphor of “the middle” in evoking the problem of identity, thematised in the text, presented in the way different from the other stories in the volume Dwa listy (Two Letters).Uniwersytet w Białymstoku20922

It has the power to create and extend the boundaries of literature. The book offers a theoretical enquiry into the multiple aspects of satire and its elusive generic class. Yet if satire is to be used effectively and increase our understanding of the refined highbrow literature, it requires a precise definition and adequate analytical tools. This task appears even more urgent since in Polish literary discourse the terms ‘satire’ and ‘satirist’ have gained a narrow value-oriented meaning, and tend to denote a literary practice which is highly specialized but, at the same time, artistically ‘inferior’. Its secondary status results from a narrow perspective on satire and the neglect of its historical transformations. It further seems to run counter to widely accepted literary facts: such prominent writers as Witold Gombrow...

The author proves that these metaphors are a significant indicator of parabolicalism, not only when they serve the function of a compositional dominant which organizes the plot and/or the represented space, making it into a “speaking” space but, also, when they appear on the novels’ narrative level.Uniwersytet w Białymstoku10513

The author of the article refers to the metaphor of trace which conceptualizes the relationship between the writer and a literary text, as it has been proposed by Małgorzata Czermińska. In Mrożek’s works, she discovers the traces of geobiographical experience, which are reflected in his depiction of space. Consequently, the comparative study of literary works and autobiographical texts leads to the conclusion that space metaphor, which expresses Mrożek’s key dilemma – identification, stems from specific geographical experience.Uniwersytet w Białymstoku15717
